The Burnout Levels of Emergency Employees in COVID -19 Pandemic and the Related Factors

Abstract

Objective: Emergency services are areas where workload and stress are more common than others due to several reasons such as intensive working environment, long hours, variability and unpredictability of cases, the need for rapid response to patients. Emergency service employees who are already highly likely to experience burnout syndrome began to be affected by COVID-19 pandemic that emerged later in 2019 and the stress factors resulting from the pandemic. The study aims to investigate burnout levels of the emergency employees during the pandemic period and the related factors. Material and Methods: 140 emergency service employees working in two large pandemic hospitals in Samsun province were included in the study. Maslach Burnout Inventory was performed on the participants. Results: 140 people voluntarily participated in the study in total. Of them, 55% are males and 45% are females. 55.8% of the participants are married. While 40.7% of them are in the age group 18-27, 30% are in the age group 28-37. 32.1% of the participants are nurse and 28.5% are practitioner. 39.3% of the participants got infected with COVID-19. Moderate burnout was found in the patients. Maslach burnout inventory was compared by demographic data, occupation, and medical history of COVID -19 of the participants. Consequently, statistically significant differences were found between gender (p=0.003) and educational background (p=0.006) in the subscale of emotional exhaustion; between gender (p=0.038) and educational background (p=0.003) in the subscale of desensitization; and between genders (p=0.007) in the subscale of personal success. Conclusion: In this study is found that moderate burnout in emergency service employees during the pandemic. Furthermore, it can be deduced from the study findings that burnout syndrome is found more in female gender and post graduates. Other demographic findings and medical history of COVID-19 were found to have no effect on burnout syndrome.
