Determination of Corn Stover Haylage Quality Prepared By Various Additives

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of urea, formic acid and molasses addition to corn stover on the haylages nutrition composition and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMS). In the additions; 5% molasses, 0.5% urea, 1% urea, 0.5% formic acid, 5% molasses + 0.5% urea, 5% molasses + 1% urea, 5% molasses + 0.5% urea + 0.5% formic acid, 5% molasses + 1% urea + 0.5% formic acid, 0.5% urea + 0.5% formic acid or 1% urea + 0.5% formic acid were added in to corn stovers. Before supplementation of these additives, dry matter of corn stover was decreased to 45% and 50% by addition of enough water. A total of 22 sub groups were constituted. Sixty six silage samples were prepared as there replicates of each group in glass jars and the jars were opened after 60 days. Chemical composition, in vitro digestibility and pH analyses of haylage were analyzed. While crude protein values are increasing with addition of molasses and urea, no change with addition of formic acid. These additives decreased NDF and ADF levels of haylages. Urea addition increased pH values of haylage samples. Molasses addition to corn strakes increased IVOMS levels of haylages. In conclusion; %5 molase, 5% molase + 0.5% urea, 5% molase + 0.5% urea + 0.5% formic acid addition to haylages could be evaluated with regard to both haylage quality and organic matter digestibility.
