The Comparison of the Beef Sectors in Turkey, the United States and European Union and the Evaluation of the Sector in terms of International Trade
Abstract
The asymmetric structure of the Customs Union signed between Turkey and the European Union (EU) in 1996
causes trade deviation between Turkey and the countries that signed free trade agreement (FTA) with the EU. In case of a
potential Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP) between EU and United States (US), there could
be adverse effects of this agreement on Turkish economy. Turkish Authorities accelerate their attempt to be a part of TTIP
or signing a new FTA with the US to avoid this situation. It is quite possible of the US, as an important red meat producer
and exporter, to demand concessions on this products from Turkey. The most important trade barriers for the import of live
beef cattle and red meat from the US are high customs duties of these products in Turkey, using hormones to improve feed
intake and genetically modified feed in beef production in the US and the problems of the sector. It is necessary to
demonstrate an attitude against beef concessions and a protective policy on Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures in
potential FTA negotiations.
