Tragedy is one of the oldest branches of theatre. The first rules of tragedy had been defined by Aristoteles in the classical age. From the classical age up to 21st century which is a long period of its adventure, there has been some changes in the concept of tragedy. In this study the ideas of different critic on classical and modern tragedy will be given. So many article on that subject were handled. Most of discussion is on the famous American theatre writer Arthur Miller’s master work Death of a Salesman whether it could be accepted as a tragedy work or not. Also could the tragedy of an ordinary man be written or not. Many critics claim that Miller’s master work cannot be accepted as tragedy because it does not maintain the rules of Aristotelian tragedy. On the other hand, Miller himself and many other critics bet that Death of Salesman is one of the best tragedies written in 20th century. And they add that the rules of tragedy of classical age cannot be applied in modern age. So just as the changes in other scientific fields the rules of tragedy can be changed or adopted to our age. Thus an ordinary individual or a society like salesmen who are the ponies of the American economy can be the heroes of modern tragedy as well.
