Reflections of Arcology Concept in the Cyberpunk Genre

Abstract

Since the 17th century, with the accelerating increase in the world population, the need for urbanization has increased and this situation has led many professional groups to produce different solutions. In 1969, Italian architect Paolo Soleri proposed architectural design principles under the name of Arcology. Arcology describes self-sufficient megastructures that are completely independent in areas such as energy and food production, climate control, waste management and treatment. In these structures, there are spaces for all human needs such as health, education and housing. Arcology has been adopted and popularized by science fiction writers due to its futuristic and utopian aspects. In this study, the ways in which the concept of Arcology appears in the Cyberpunk genre and dystopian future predictions and the design and use of Arcology structures are examined. In the study, movies were selected according to the purposive sampling method in line with certain criteria. The films belonging to the Cyberpunk genre and containing Arcology structures were analyzed with the visual semiotics method. The similarities of Cyberpunk predictions with reality and their applicability for the coming years are emphasized by comparing them with the structures that can be considered as examples of the Arcology concept in the World.

Arkoloji Konseptinin Cyberpunk Türünde Yansımaları

Abstract

17. yüzyıldan itibaren dünya nüfusunun ivmelenerek artması ile kentleşme ihtiyacı artmış ve bu durum birçok meslek grubunu farklı çözümler üretmeye yöneltmiştir. İtalyan mimar Paolo Soleri 1969 yılında Arkoloji adıyla mimari tasarım ilkeleri öne sürmüştür. Arkoloji, tümüyle bağımsız enerji ve gıda üretimi, iklim kontrolü, atık yönetimi, arıtma gibi alanlarda kendi kendine yeten mega yapıları betimlemektedir. Bu yapılarda sağlık, eğitim, konut gibi tüm insan ihtiyaçları için mekânlar bulunmaktadır. Arkoloji gelecekçi ve ütopik yönleri sebebiyle bilim kurgu yazarları tarafından benimsenmiş ve popüler hale getirilmiştir. Çalışmada Arkoloji konseptinin Cyberpunk türünde ve distopik gelecek öngörülerinde yer alış biçimleri ve Arkoloji yapılarının tasarım ve kullanımları incelenmiştir. Çalışmada, sinema filmleri, belirli ölçütler doğrultusunda amaçlı örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenmiştir. Cyberpunk türüne ait ve Arkoloji yapılarını barındıran sinema filmleri üzerinden görsel göstergebilim metodu ile incelenmiştir. Dünya üzerinde Arkoloji konseptine örnek sayılabilecek yapılar ile karşılaştırılarak, Cyberpunk öngörülerin gerçek ile benzerlikleri ve gelecek yıllar için uygulanabilirliği üzerinde durulmuştur.
