Prof. Dr. Nilufer Narli, Founding Director of The Center for Health, Society and Prevention Studies (CHSPS) at Bahçeşehir University, earned her PhD in Social Sciences with a major in Political Sociology from the School of Comparative Social Sciences at the University of Sains Malaysia. Notably, she was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship in 1993 and possesses extensive experience in establishing academic institutions.
Narli founded the Sociology Department at Bahçeşehir University in 2005 and served as the Vice Rector of Bahçeşehir University from 2005 to 2006. Before her appointment as Vice Rector in September 2005, she held the position of founding Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Kadir Has University from October 2003 to August 2005. Preceding that, she established and led the Department of Sociology at Marmara University from December 1999 to September 2003, where she also chaired the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Institute of Middle East Studies. Additionally, she taught at the Institute of Women’s Studies at Istanbul University from 1995 to 1999.
Narli's research and teaching interests are diverse, encompassing topics such as Islamist movements in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, irregular migration in the Balkans, the Syrian crisis and gender, military and good governance in Turkey, political memory, coup memory in Turkey and Latin America, conflicts in the Caucasus, and COVID-19-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Turkey. She plays a pivotal role in organizing international conferences focused on regional cooperation in the Middle East. Prof. Narli has undertaken several research projects funded by TUBITAK, including "Political Memory in Turkey" (2013-2015), as well as projects supported by international organizations. She has actively participated in conferences on European security and civil-military relations in a comparative perspective.
Furthermore, she has extensive experience in collaborating with women's NGOs in Turkey and possesses a strong academic background in gender and conflict studies. Narli has conducted research and training activities and served as a conflict resolution trainer in seminars for the Southeast Europe Leadership Initiatives for Women NGOs in the Balkan countries in 2000 and 2001. She was also part of the Turkish Delegation to the Beijing +5 Women 2000 conference, focusing on gender equality, development, and peace for the 21st century, which was the 23rd special session of the UN General Assembly in 2000. Additionally, she was a member of the Turkish Delegation to the UN 50th and 51st Sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2000 and 2010.
Narli is also involved in art activities in Turkey, with her recent participation in events such as the feminenartfest 2022 (October 22-25, 2022) and the YES TO ART International Symposium I (December 8, 2022).
