Emotional Labour: A Study on Nurses

Abstract

In this study, the emotional labor tendencies of nurses and the factors affecting these tendencies were examined. The sample is composed of 188 nurses working in a private hospital. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used as a “mixed methods research” to test the hypotheses of the study. The Emotional Labor Scale whose validation test has been made before based upon a national sample and individual and group focused interview forms were utilized as instruments to measure the variables used in the analysis. According to findings, the emotional labor tendency of nurses was found high and had some relations with the education. In addition to this, sub-dimensions of the emotional labor did not differentiate according to gender, marital status and the position in the organization. On the contrary, the qualitative data showed us that the tendency to emotional labor has differed according to positions within the organization.
