Charting The Path Forward: Envisioning The Future of Ecotourism and Environmental Sustainability

Abstract

Nowadays the search of tourists for authentic experiences and the increasing negative effects of mass tourism, known as sea, sand and sun, on destinations, have led to a growing interest in ecotourism and its activities. Ecotourism is a nature-based tourism activity that protects the environment and gives importance to the welfare of local people. Therefore, the only way to ensure the protection and transfer of natural, environmental and biological resources, which are among the main objectives of ecotourism, to future generations is to ensure environmental sustainability. As such, the understanding of environmental sustainability has become increasingly important recently. Environmental sustainability is a holistic understanding that minimizes the effects of humans on nature and the environment, uses natural resources in a balanced way and aims to leave a healthy environment to future generations. It is emphasized that the importance of ecotourism activities and environmental sustainability will continue to increase rapidly in the future thanks to the developments in technology. Artificial intelligence, internet of things, blockchain, big data and drone technologies in particular will provide significant benefits in achieving environmental sustainability goals such as energy saving, water saving and waste management. In addition, to ensure environmental sustainability, it is necessary to minimize dependence on fossil fuels and invest in renewable energy sources such as solar or wind energy. In the light of all this information, this section explains the concept of ecotourism, the principles and benefits of ecotourism and the concept of environmental sustainability. Subsequently, future trends and applications of ecotourism and environmental sustainability are presented.

Geleceğe Yön Vermek: Ekoturizm ve Çevresel Sürdürülebilirliğin Yol Haritası

Abstract

Günümüzde turistlerin otantik deneyimler arayışı ve deniz, kum ve güneş olarak bilinen kitle turizminin destinasyonlar üzerindeki artan olumsuz etkileri, ekoturizme ve bu kapsamdaki faaliyetlere olan ilgiyi giderek artırmıştır. Ekoturizm, çevreyi koruyan ve yerel halkın refahına önem veren doğa temelli bir turizm faaliyetidir. Bu nedenle, ekoturizmin temel hedefleri arasında yer alan doğal, çevresel ve biyolojik kaynakların korunması ve gelecek nesillere aktarılmasının tek yolu, çevresel sürdürülebilirliğin sağlanmasıdır. Bu bağlamda, çevresel sürdürülebilirlik anlayışı son zamanlarda giderek daha fazla önem kazanmaktadır.Çevresel sürdürülebilirlik, insanın doğa ve çevre üzerindeki etkilerini en aza indiren, doğal kaynakları dengeli şekilde kullanan ve gelecek nesillere sağlıklı bir çevre bırakmayı amaçlayan bütüncül bir yaklaşımdır. Teknolojideki gelişmeler sayesinde ekoturizm faaliyetlerinin ve çevresel sürdürülebilirliğin öneminin gelecekte de hızla artacağı vurgulanmaktadır. Özellikle yapay zekâ, nesnelerin interneti, blokzincir, büyük veri ve drone teknolojileri; enerji tasarrufu, su tasarrufu ve atık yönetimi gibi çevresel sürdürülebilirlik hedeflerine ulaşmada önemli katkılar sağlayacaktır. Ayrıca çevresel sürdürülebilirliğin sağlanabilmesi için fosil yakıtlara olan bağımlılığın en aza indirilmesi ve güneş veya rüzgâr enerjisi gibi yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarına yatırım yapılması gerekmektedir. Tüm bu bilgiler ışığında, bu bölümde ekoturizm kavramı, ekoturizmin ilkeleri ve faydaları ile çevresel sürdürülebilirlik kavramı ele alınmaktadır. Devamında ise ekoturizm ve çevresel sürdürülebilirliğe yönelik gelecekteki eğilimler ve uygulamalar sunulmaktadır.
