The Evolution and Structural Dynamics of the Touristification Literature: A Bibliometric and Science Mapping Approach

Abstract

Touristification has increasingly become a central concept for explaining tourism-driven spatial transformation, the restructuring of housing markets, and processes of social displacement in contemporary cities. Despite the rapid expansion of this body of literature, its structural development, thematic orientations, and theoretical foundations have not yet been systematically examined in a comprehensive manner. This study aims to analyze the evolution of the touristification literature through an integrated bibliometric approach. A total of 536 peer-reviewed articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus databases were analyzed using performance analysis and science mapping techniques. The analyses were conducted through RStudio, bibliometrix/Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer software. The findings indicate a marked acceleration and institutionalization of the field after 2018, demonstrating that touristification has evolved from a marginal concept into an established interdisciplinary research domain. Thematic mapping and keyword analyses reveal that the literature primarily concentrates on housing markets, urban transformation, overtourism, sustainability, cultural heritage, and platform economies. Co-citation analysis further demonstrates that the field rests upon a strong theoretical backbone shaped by critical urban studies, political economy, displacement processes, and digitally mediated spatial commodification. In particular, short-term rental systems and the financialization of housing markets emerge as the core structural drivers of touristification. The study shows that touristification does not merely represent a research line focused on tourism growth; rather, it embodies a multidimensional urban transformation dynamic deeply embedded in neoliberal urbanization processes. These findings suggest that future research should further develop the field through comparative spatial analyses, housing policy perspectives, and broader discussions on social sustainability.

Turistleştirme Literatürünün Evrimi ve Yapısal Dinamikleri: Bibliyometrik Analiz ve Bilimsel Haritalama Yaklaşımı

Abstract

Turistleştirme, çağdaş kentlerde turizm kaynaklı mekânsal dönüşüm, konut piyasalarının yeniden yapılanması ve toplumsal yerinden edilme süreçlerini açıklamada giderek merkezî bir kavram haline gelmiştir. Buna karşın, bu hızla genişleyen literatürün yapısal gelişimi, tematik yönelimleri ve kuramsal temelleri henüz bütüncül biçimde sistematik olarak ortaya konulmamıştır. Bu çalışma, turistleştirme literatürünün evrimini entegre bir bibliyometrik analiz yaklaşımıyla kapsamlı biçimde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Web of Science Core Collection ve Scopus veri tabanlarından elde edilen 536 hakemli makale üzerinde performans analizleri ve bilimsel haritalama teknikleri uygulanmış; analizler RStudio, bibliometrix/Biblioshiny ve VOSviewer yazılımları kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular, literatürde 2018 yılı sonrasında belirgin bir hızlanma ve kurumsallaşma sürecine girildiğini, turistleştirmenin marjinal bir kavramdan disiplinlerarası yerleşik bir araştırma alanına dönüştüğünü göstermektedir. Tematik haritalama ve anahtar kelime analizleri, alanın konut piyasaları, kentsel dönüşüm, aşırı turizm, sürdürülebilirlik, kültürel miras ve platform ekonomileri etrafında yoğunlaştığını ortaya koymaktadır. Ortak atıf analizi ise turistleştirme literatürünün eleştirel kent çalışmaları, politik ekonomi, yerinden edilme süreçleri ve dijital platform temelli mekânsal metalaşma eksenlerinde şekillenen güçlü bir kuramsal omurgaya sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Özellikle kısa dönemli kiralama sistemleri ve finansallaşmış konut piyasaları, turistleştirmenin temel yapısal itici mekanizmaları olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Çalışma, turistleştirme literatürünün yalnızca turizm büyümesine odaklanan bir araştırma hattı olmadığını; neoliberal kentleşme süreçleriyle iç içe geçmiş çok boyutlu bir kentsel dönüşüm dinamiğini temsil ettiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bulgular, alanın gelecekte karşılaştırmalı mekânsal analizler, konut politikaları ve toplumsal sürdürülebilirlik perspektifleriyle daha da derinleştirilmesi gerektiğine işaret etmektedir.
