The Impact of Globalization on Growth and Development in Developed and Developing Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

Year 2025, Volume: 40 Issue: 4, 1230 - 1251, 01.10.2025

Abstract

A review of the literature reveals a predominant conceptual discussion surrounding the efficacy of globalization policies in developed countries (DCs) as compared to developing countries (EDCs). When the empirical literature is examined, it is seen that the effects of globalisation are generally investigated either only in terms of growth or only in terms of development. Consequently, this study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge by examining the effects of globalisation in terms of both growth and development for developed and developing countries. The present study therefore aims to empirically investigate the effects of globalisation on economic growth and development according to DC and EDC groups. In this study, the effects of globalisation on growth and development in a sample of 39 DCs and 30 EDCs were analysed by applying the Westerlund (2005) cointegration test, the Dynamic Common Correlated Effects-Medium Group (Dynamic CCE-MG) estimator, and the Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test methods in the 1990-2020 time interval. The findings indicate that the impact of globalisation on growth in the long run is positive, with this effect being more than three times higher in DCs than in EDCs. While the impact of globalisation on development in the long run is also found to be positive and significant, it is observed that the effect of globalisation on development is similar in terms of the rates for DCs and EDCs. The Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality test results indicate the presence of bidirectional causality between globalisation, economic growth, and globalisation development in both country groups.

Küreselleşmenin Gelişmiş ve Gelişmekte Olan Ülkelerde Büyüme ve Kalkınmaya Etkisi: Panel Veri Analizi

Year 2025, Volume: 40 Issue: 4, 1230 - 1251, 01.10.2025
https://doi.org/10.24988/ije.1652765
