Exploring the Potential of Fables for Teaching Environmental Issues: A Case Study with Fifth-Grade Students

Abstract

This study investigated the potential benefits of using fables as an alternative activity in teaching environmental issues in environmental education. The research was designed as a case study. This research was conducted with 15 5th-grade students in a public school in a village of Sakarya province in Türkiye. Six fable-based activities developed by the researchers were used in the study. In the process, three different applications were made in stages: full-text fables, incomplete-text fables, and free-fable writing activities. Students first focused on environmental issues by examining fables presented in their complete texts, then completed unfinished fables. As a final activity, they wrote their own fable incorporating environmental issues. Documents obtained from the fable activities and a structured interview form were used as data collection tools. At the end of the research, it was determined that the students' awareness of environmental problems increased, and they suggested solutions to the problems. Based on the students' opinions and the researcher teacher's observations, the study concluded that the use of fables in environmental education positively contributes to instilling environmental awareness in students. In this direction, the authors evaluate fable-based activities as a teaching technique in environmental education by considering students' cognitive developmental characteristics.
