An Analysis On the Political Consciousness of the Peasants in the Film Susuz Yaz

Abstract

This study focuses on the political consciousness and actions of the peasants in their struggle against the modern, on the basis of the literature about the culture and political consciousness of the peasants, in Metin Erksan's movie; Susuz Yaz. It is observed that three main approaches, which have the propositions about the peasant culture and political consciousness, are in competition with each other in the movie. These are the modernist approach, the Marxist approach and the populist approach. By focusing on the cultural elements, political actions and actors in the movie, this study aims to reveal the nature of the power relations among the state, Osman and other peasants and which the approach the film adopts in representing these relations. As a result, it will be argued that the movie’s narrative adopts the arguments of the populist approach among these three competing approaches, puts the traditional rules of the villagers against the modern, and takes a populist position against the modernist one.

Susuz Yaz Filmi’nde Köylülerin Politik Bilinci Hakkında Bir Analiz

Abstract

Bu çalışma köylülerin kültürü ve politik bilinci ile ilgili oluşmuş literatürü temel alarak Metin Erksan’ın Susuz Yaz filmindeki köylülerin modern olanla mücadelelerindeki politik bilinçlerine ve eylemlerine odaklanmaktadır. Susuz Yaz filminde, köylü kültürü ve politik bilinci ile ilgili önermelere sahip üç temel yaklaşımın birbirleriyle rekabet içerisinde olduğu gözlemlenir. Bunlar modernist yaklaşım, Marksist yaklaşım ve popülist yaklaşımdır. Bu çalışma filmdeki kültürel ögelere, politik aksiyonlara ve aktörlere odaklanarak devlet-Osman ve diğer köylüler arasındaki güç ilişkisinin niteliğini ve bu güç ilişkisinin temsilinde filmin hangi yaklaşımı benimsediğini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Sonuç olarak filmin anlatısının birbirleriyle rekabet içerisindeki bu üç yaklaşımdan popülist yaklaşımın argümanlarını benimsediği, modern olana karşı köylünün geleneksel kurallarını ortaya koyduğu ve modernist olan karşısında popülist bir pozisyon aldığı iddia edilecektir.
