An Integrative Examination of the Esports Industry and Esports Sponsorship

Abstract

Esports, which has become a global phenomenon, is a rapidly growing industry that emerged from the professional playing of computer and video games in a competitive environment. Today, esports has transformed into an ecosystem that reaches millions of viewers and creates billions of dollars in economic value. Within the scope of the research, the historical development of esports, its status in the world and in Türkiye, esports marketing, and sponsorship practices were analyzed in detail. As a result of the examination, it was observed that esports has evolved from merely being an entertainment activity into an industry that creates economic value on a global scale, becoming an effective medium for brands to reach especially the young target audience. The exponential increase in prize pools distributed in tournaments accelerates the professionalization process of esports, while the number and diversity of stakeholders involved in the ecosystem is expanding. It is anticipated that a significant portion of the industry’s total revenue is obtained from sponsorship agreements, and this situation is expected to continue increasing in the future. The study also presented suggestions for the development of the esports ecosystem in Türkiye, such as strengthening the institutional structure, improving technological infrastructure, and expanding esports education. In this context, deepening studies in the field of esports will contribute to the development of the literature.
