Daily Fluid Consumption, Type and Affecting Factors of Older Adults Living at Home and In Nursing Homes: A Descriptive-Comparative Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the daily amount, types and influencing factors of fluid consumption among older adults living at home and in nursing homes. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with a total of 237 older adults between May 18, 2024, and August 10, 2024. Of these participants, 126 were living in their own homes and 111 were living in six different private and public nursing homes. Research ethics committee approval (16.05. 2024; decision no: 0254) and institutional permissions were obtained. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews using an individual information form, the fluid consumption characteristics form and the fluid consumption frequency form. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 statistical package. Results: Daily fluid consumption differed significantly between older adults living in nursing homes and those living in their own homes. The types of fluids consumed most by older adults in both groups were water, black tea, soup and ayran. Reasons such as “difficulty accessing fluids” and “needing assistance with fluid intake” were significantly higher in nursing homes compared to those living in their own homes. Conclusion: The types of fluids consumed by older adults living in nursing homes may depend more on the facilities provided by the institution rather than their personal preferences. When older adults cannot access their preferred fluids, their overall fluid intake tends to decrease. Consequently, it is recommended that older adults' fluid preferences be considered to ensure adequate fluid consumption.
