Personal Progress Scale – Revised Validity and Reliability Study of the Turkish Version
Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study is to translate the Personal Progress Scale-Revised (PPS-R) developed for women into Turkish as well as to realize its validity and reliability study. Materials and Method: PPS-R language and structural validity was carried out in the study. The study was applied to the 63 women with disabled children who had been selected via the results of the initial power analysis (80.181% power). To ensure language validity; the PPS-R criteria which were published by Worell and Remer in 2003, and later revised by Johnson et al. in 2005, were independently translated into Turkish by two experts having PhD in the field of social service and were ultimately finalized under the leadership of MT. For the sake of language equivalence, the PPS-R articles adapted to Turkish were checked by an expert translator and necessary corrections were employed. Using the retranslation method, the finalized PPS-R itemsin Turkish were later translated into English again by an expert translator and the retranslated text was detected to have a high similarity with the original text. To ensure structural validity; Cronbach alpha (α) coefficient was employed in reliability analyses. Exploratory Factor analysis was used to achieve validity analysis. The study was carried out at a private special education center in Yenimahalle, Ankara. Findings:There are no items with atotal correlation value lower than 0.20 among 28 items in PPS-R. For this reason, no item has been removed. The Cronbach alpha (α) reliability coefficient calculated for 28 items was 0.761. When the total variance was examined, it can be mentioned that for the application data for 28 items, there happens to be 1 factor and the measured value of the quality via this factor was66.478%. Since Tukey additivity test is p<0.05, it is concluded that the scale is suitable for obtaining a total score. In addition, there was a significant difference in the total score of the scale among the demographic questions “sparetime situations” categories. Conclusion: Turkish adaptation of the personal progress scale of the designed sample (women with disabled children) can be claimed to be valid and reliable. It is suggested that studies of women within different sample groups in our country should be increased.
