A Study on the 'Binitarian' (Binary) Understanding of God in Early Christianity

Abstract

The main issue in the christological debates that form the backbone of Christian theology is centered around the nature of Jesus Christ and his relationship with God the Father. These debates, which began very early on, reached a certain level in Christian theology and led to the emergence of a deity system called the Trinity. In this painful process leading to the Trinity, it is known that there were various conceptions of God that had not yet ‘matured’. This article will argue that Christians had a dual conception of God before the trinitarian conception of God, which we call the Trinity, emerged in Christian theology. Analysing this process will provide a better understanding of the path to the acceptance of the Trinity. Although the dual understanding of God is not a standard belief accepted by all Christians, its traces can be seen in the texts of the most important church fathers. In this study, the question of how Christianity, which inherited the strict monotheistic Jewish heritage, could accept a dualistic understanding of God will be discussed. In seeking an answer to this question, it will be argued that there may have been different Jewish interpretations in the geography where Christianity was born and that especially Hellenistic Judaism had a significant influence on early Christian theology. In the early period of Christianity, it will be said that there were two different binitarian (dual) conceptions of God accepted before the Trinity. The first of these refers to a structure consisting only of God the Father and Jesus Christ, whereas the second type of binitarian conception of God has a relatively more complex/indeterminate character. consisting of God the Father on one side of the Godhead system and the identity of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit on the other side. In this article, it will be demonstrated that there are examples of both types of the dual Godhead in the texts of the church fathers in this process. This article, we will show that there are examples of both types of the binary Godhead in the texts of the church fathers with the references we bring in this process.

Hristiyanlığın Erken Döneminde ‘Biniteryen’ (İkili) Tanrı Anlayışı Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Erken dönem Hristiyan ilahiyatçıların teolojik çekişmelerinde merkezi problem olarak zikredilebilecekolan kristolojik tartışmalardaki temel mesele, İsa Mesih’in mahiyeti ve Baba Tanrı ile ilişkisi etrafında şekillenmektedir. Çok erken dönemde başlayan bu tartışmalar Hristiyan ilahiyatında belirli bir seviyeye gelip artık teslis denilen tanrılık sistemini ortaya çıkarmıştır. İşte teslise giden bu sancılı süreçte henüz ‘olgunlaşmamış’ muhtelif bazı tanrı tasavvurlarının olduğu bilinmektedir. Bu makalede Hristiyan ilahiyatında teslis denilen üçlü Tanrı anlayışı oluşmadan önce Hristiyanlar içerisinde ikili bir Tanrı anlayışına sahip olan önemli sayıda kilise babasının olduğu iddia edilecektir. Bu ara süreci görmek teslisin kabulüne giden yolun daha iyi anlaşılmasını sağlayacaktır. İkili Tanrı anlayışı,Hristiyanların tümü tarafından kabul edilmiş standart bir inanç olmasa da önemli kilise babalarının metinlerinde bunun izleri görülebilmektedir. Bu araştırmada katı monoteist Yahudi mirasını devralan Hristiyanlığın ikili bir Tanrı anlayışını nasıl kabul edebildiği sorusu üzerinden bir tartışma yürütülecektir. Bu soruya cevap ararken Hristiyanlığın doğduğu coğrafyada farklı Yahudi yorumlarının olabileceği, özellikle de Helenistik Yahudiliğinin erken dönem Hristiyan ilahiyatını ciddi derecede etkilediği ifade edilecektir. Hristiyanlığın erken döneminde teslis öncesi kabul edilen iki farklı biniteryen (ikili) Tanrı anlayışının olduğu söylenecektir. Bunlardan birincisinde sadece Baba Tanrı ile İsa Mesih’ten oluşan bir yapı kastedilirken, biniteryen Tanrı anlayışının ikinci türünde ise tanrılık sisteminin bir tarafında Baba Tanrı varken diğer tarafında İsa Mesih ile Kutsal Ruh’un özdeşliğinden oluşan görece daha karmaşık/belirsiz bir karakterin olduğu ifade edilecektir. Bu araştırmada sözü edilen süreçte kilise babalarının metinlerinde ikili tanrılık yapısının her iki türünden de örneklerin olduğu ortaya koyulacaktır.
