God Image in Turkish Society: A Sociology of Literature Attempt
Abstract
Sociology of religion uses many methods to examine the relationship between society and religion which is its main subject theme. These methods are mostly methods of general sociology. When we want to examine a subject related to the religion and belief of society, it is possible to do it in different ways. The relations between various social institutions, events, facts in society and religion can be examined by social history data. At the same time, the current situation about this fact can be examined with the field study. It is important to note that by analyzing the artistic works of the society, it is possible to make analyzes on the religion-society relations during the periods in which these products are produced and survived, provided that they do not deny that these methods are important, necessary or even dominant methods. Especially, literary works, in this area, have very rich data. Because belief, worship or attitude dimensions of religion, which cover a wide area in social life, are reflected in literary works, novels, poems, epics in oral and written form as phenomena, concepts or symbols.
Thus literary works constitute an important source in terms of sociology of religion, including information about the religion, understanding and religious experience of the society and the historical process, as well as the possibility of examining the changes from the past to the present day. However, there are only a limited number of studies on this subject in our country yet. In this article, which should be seen as a modest contribution to the study of this area, the Turkish society has been evaluated in a narrow and limited context about relations between Turkish society and religion through the reflection of the image of God in the mind and heart of the Turkish people to its poetry.
