The Unchanging Story of the Age of Crises: The Fragile and Stagnant Middle Classes

Abstract

This study stems from the debate that the middle classes have shrunk due to increasing and deepening economic and social instability and shows how these classes have changed over the last three years. Using quantitative methods, the study collected data from middle-class professionals in Konya and analysed it using SPSS software. A substantial proportion of participants described their lives three years ago as a more comfortable, predictable, and economically stable period, while they described the present as a struggle for survival under increasing economic pressures. The study’s findings reveal that, over the past three years, the middle classes have experienced a significant loss of prosperity and prestige, along with fractures in their consumption, education preferences, class positions, perceptions of the future and the education-based income hierarchy is no longer valid.
