Reading the Digital 1984 Through the State and the Corporation: An Analysis of the Films Snowden and The Circle

Abstract

George Orwell’s novel 1984 is cited as one of the most important dystopias of all time. The central discourse of this cult masterpiece centers on the threat the totalitarian state poses to individual freedoms. This threat, enforced through constant surveillance, creates a model in which freedoms and privacy are sacrificed in the name of societal interests. Surveillance, which continues in the digital age, has diversified and changed in nature. Corporate surveillance, entering our lives alongside state surveillance, demonstrates a diversification of actors. Volunteering and consent production also entered the scope of surveillance, with a legitimizing effect. Addressing this digital transformation, Snowden (2016) depicts a state-based surveillance condition faced in tandem with security-oriented rhetoric and policies. In contrast, The Circle (2017) examines a process through which surveillance is internalized and gains legitimacy. Using critical discourse analysis, this study examines the transformation of surveillance in the context of the relevant films. It can be said that, unlike classical totalitarian models, the modern surveillance society has evolved into a hybrid structure in which the state and the private sector are intertwined.

Dijital Çağın 1984’ünü Devlet ve Şirket Üzerinden Okumak: Snowden ve The Circle Filmleri Üzerinden Bir Çözümleme

Abstract

George Orwell’ın romanı 1984, tüm zamanların en önemli distopyalarından birisi olarak gösterilmektedir. Bu kült eserin ana söylemini, totaliter devletin bireysel özgürlüklere yönelik tehdidi oluşturmaktadır. Her an gözetim ile gerçekleşen bu tehdit, özgürlüklerin ve mahremiyetin toplumsal çıkarlar adına feda edildiği bir modeli ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Dijital çağda da devam eden gözetim, çeşitlenerek nitelik değiştirmiştir. Devlet gözetimine ek olarak hayatımıza giren şirket gözetimi, aktör sayısındaki çeşitlenmeyi ortaya koymaktadır. Gözetimin bünyesine gönüllülük ve rıza üretimi de dahil olmuş, böylelikle meşrulaştırıcı bir etki de beraberinde gelmiştir. Bu dijital dönüşümü ele alan Snowden (2016), güvenlikçi söylem ve politikalarla birlikte devlet temelli bir gözetim durumu ile karşı karşıya kalındığını işlemiştir. The Circle (2017) ise gözetimin içselleştirilip, meşruiyet kazandığı bir süreci ele almıştır. Çalışmada eleştirel söylem analizi kullanılarak, ilgili filmler bağlamında, gözetimin dönüşümü incelenmiştir. Modern gözetim toplumunun, klasik totaliter modellerden farklı olarak devlet ve özel sektörün iç içe geçtiği hibrit bir yapıya evrildiği söylenebilir.
