The Adaptation of the Revised Parenting Behavior Inventory (R-PBI) to Turkish Culture: A Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Revised Parenting Behavior Inventory (R-PBI). This study was conducted with 1049 parents from Kütahya, Sivas, and Uşak provinces. The psychometric properties of the scale were investigated by test re-test, Cronbach’s alpha, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and concurrent validity methods. In order to evaluate the measure-dependent validity of the scale, the Family Harmony Scale-Short Form and Parental Attitude Research Instrument were used. According to the results of confirmatory factor analysis, the three-dimensional model (Warmth, Control, Hostility) was an acceptable fit [CMIN=1244.94, df=402 CMIN/df =3.097; (p=.00), RMSEA=.083, CFI=.89, GFI=.88, TLI=.84, SRMR=.076]. In addition, Item factor loads ranged from 33 to .88. In the concurrent validity, Subscales of R-PBI have significant relationships with Family Harmony Scale and The Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI). The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient was found as α=.96 for Warmth subscale, α=.85 for Control subscale, and α=.93 for Hostility subscale. The corrected item-total correlations of the R-PBI ranged from .34 to.92. Overall findings demonstrated that this scale had acceptable validity and high reliability scores and that it may be used in assessing parenting behavior.

REVİZE EDİLMİŞ EBEVEYNLİK DAVRANIŞI ENVANTERİ’NİN (R-EDE) TÜRK KÜLTÜRÜNE UYARLANMASI: BİR GEÇERLİK VE GÜVENİRLİK ÇALIŞMASI

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Revize Edilmiş Ebeveynlik Davranışı Envanteri'nin (R-EDE) Türkçe versiyonunun geçerlik ve güvenirliğini incelemektir. Araştırmaya Kütahya, Sivas ve Uşak illerinden 1049 ebeveyn katılmıştır. Ölçeğin psikometrik özellikleri test tekrar test, Cronbach alfa, açıklayıcı faktör analizi, doğrulayıcı faktör analizi ve eşzamanlı ölçek geçerliği yöntemleri ile incelenmiştir. Ölçeğin ölçüt bağlantılı geçerliliğini saptamak için Aile Uyum Ölçeği-Kısa Formu ve Aile Hayatı ve Çocuk Yetiştirme Tutumu Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Doğrulayıcı faktör analizi sonuçlarına göre, üç boyutlu modelin (Sıcaklık, Kontrol, Düşmanlık/Aşırı kızgınlık) uyum iyiliği değerleri [CMIN=1244.94, sd=402 CMIN/sd =3.097; (p=.00), RMSEA=.083, CFI=.89, GFI=.88, TLI=.84, SRMR=.076] kabul edilebilir bir uyum göstermiştir. Ayrıca, madde faktör yükleri 33 ila .88 arasında değişmektedir. R-EDE ile Aile Uyum Ölçeği ve Aile Hayatı ve Çocuk Yetiştirme Tutumu Ölçeği arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişkiler saptanmıştır. Ölçeğin Cronbach alfa iç tutarlık güvenirlik katsayısı içtenlik/samimiyet alt boyutu için α=.96, Kontrol alt boyutu için α=.85, düşmanlık/aşırı kızgınlık alt boyutu için α=.93 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Düzeltilmiş madde toplam korelasyonları .34 ile .92 arasında değişmektedir. Bu sonuçlara göre R-EDE’ nin Türk kültüründe ebeveynlik davranışlarını değerlendirmede kullanılabilecek geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olduğu söylenebilir.
