Factors Influencing University Students’ Academic Achievement and Strategies Taken to Improve Their Achievement: Ethiopia as a Sample

Abstract

The overall purpose of this study was to assess heads, teachers, student-affairs officers and students’ views about factors influencing university students’ academic achievement and strategies taken to improve their achievement at Debre Markos University where found in Debre Markos city of East Gojjam province, Ethiopia. In this study, a case study design in accordance with the qualitative research method was used. The purpose of the case study is to draw conclusions about a particular case. The working group of this study contained 1-head, 1-teacher, 1-students’ affair official and 3-students. The researchers developed a semi-structured interview form and ensured its validity by giving two academicians who were experts on the topic and then the pilot study was conducted. As a result, firstly, participants reported university, teachers, language, families and student-related factors as the major factors influencing university students’ academic achievement. Secondly, students reported that they were revising past sheet papers and drawing up plans and so on to improve their academic achievement. The head, teacher and students’ affair official, however, reported they were giving counseling, training services, complex tasks to improve students’ academic achievement.

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın genel amacı, Doğu Gojjam vilayetinin Debre Markos şehrinde bulunan Debre Markos Üniversitesi'nde üniversite öğrencilerinin akademik başarısını etkileyen faktörler ve başarılarını iyileştirmek için alınan stratejiler hakkında müdürlerin, öğretmenlerin, öğrenci işleri görevlilerinin ve öğrencilerin görüşlerini değerlendirmekti. , Etiyopya. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemine uygun durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Vaka çalışmasının amacı, belirli bir vaka hakkında sonuçlar çıkarmaktır. Bu çalışmanın çalışma grubu 1 başkan, 1 öğretmen, 1 öğrenci ilişkisi yetkilisi ve 3 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmacılar yarı yapılandırılmış bir görüşme formu geliştirmiş ve konuyla ilgili uzman iki akademisyene verilerek geçerliliğini sağlamış ve ardından pilot çalışma yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, katılımcılar ilk olarak üniversite öğrencilerinin akademik başarısını etkileyen ana faktörler olarak üniversite, öğretmenler, dil, aileler ve öğrencilerle ilgili faktörleri rapor etmişlerdir. İkinci olarak, öğrenciler akademik başarılarını iyileştirmek için eski sayfa kağıtlarını gözden geçirdiklerini ve planlar hazırladıklarını bildirdiler. Bununla birlikte, müdür, öğretmen ve öğrencilerin ilişki yetkilisi, öğrencilerin akademik başarısını iyileştirmek için danışmanlık, eğitim hizmetleri ve karmaşık görevler verdiklerini bildirdi.
