Samad Behrangi, having profound influences on the literary and
intellectual life of the XXth century Iranian society, also politically
contributed to the leftist / socialist struggle of the 1960s as an activist and
author. Behrangi, during his short life less than three decades, served as a
village teacher and dedicated a great effort to his students’ enlightenment,
along with his career as an intellectual and writer. He has been evaluated as
one of the leading representatives of the Iranian rural literature and children’s
literature with his works that set the first successful examples of the genre.
Turkish identity had also considerably affected Behrangi’s intellectual
personality in addition to leftist / socialist ideology which will be discussed
within the article. Significantly contributing to Azerbaijani-Turkish folk
literature, he is one of the leading Turkish intellectuals of Tabriz. Not only
addressing children and teenagers, Behrangi’s literary works also speak to
adults with his messages carrying the importance of ‘dedication, self-devotion,
diligence, willpower, self-improvement, fight against oppression’ etc.
