Turkish Teachers' Opinions on Listening Education Practices

Abstract

Listening, the first language skill acquired by humans, is a complex skill with mental and physical dimensions based on hearing, comprehending, understanding, mentally structuring, and evaluating auditory stimuli. Turkish teachers play a functional role in achieving the objectives of listening education. This study aims to determine the opinions of Turkish teachers regarding the implementation of listening education. The participants in this study, designed using a qualitative approach and a phenomenological pattern, consisted of 17 Turkish teachers selected using purposive sampling. A semi-structured interview guide consisting of six questions was used as the data collection tool. The data was collected through one-on-one interviews and analysed using content analysis. The study found that the activities implemented by Turkish language teachers in the context of listening education were mostly shaped according to the stages of listening, that Turkish language teachers took care to diversify listening activities, but that the activities were mostly similar in nature and limited in number, and that listening activities had a positive effect on students' focus, listening motivation, critical thinking skills, etc. However, it has been determined that Turkish language teachers encounter certain problems related to students, materials, environment, and curriculum during the process, and that they conduct measurement and evaluation within the framework of similar measurement tools and criteria. In addition, it has been determined that practical exams within the scope of listening training have negative aspects such as increasing workload and causing listening anxiety, alongside benefits such as creating listening awareness and enabling comprehensive assessment. Turkish teachers recommended allocating a separate lesson hour for listening education, reducing class sizes, instilling listening habits in families, diversifying listening/viewing texts and activities, especially in textbooks, and preferring short, concise, and clear texts. The study is considered important in terms of revealing the opinions of Turkish teachers regarding the implementation of listening education.
