Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Çin’in Liaoning Eyalet Müzesi’nde muhafaza edilen Turfan el yazmaları arasındaki Samantabhadra-caryāpraṇidhāna’nın yeni tanımlanmış eski Uygurca aliteratif nazım çevirisi incelenecektir.

An Old Uyghur Alliterative Verse Fragment of The Samantabhadra-Caryā-Pranidhāna from The Liaoning Provincial Museum Collection

Abstract

In this study, we investigate a newly identified Old Uyghur alliterative verse translation of the Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna, preserved among the Turfan manuscripts housed at the Liaoning Provincial Museum. Based on museum records, these manuscripts are attributed to 羅振玉Luo Zhenyu’s historical collection, with collection number 467 comprising several Old Uyghur manuscript fragments. The fragment examined in this study, no.467-22, features 16 lines of Chinese Buddhist text on the recto and 15 lines of Old Uyghur cursive script on the verso. The 15 lines of Old Uyghur context on the verso are a selective alliterative verse translation of Samantabhadra-caryā-pranidhāna in Chinese. Between 1988 and 1995, the Dunhuang Academy conducted a systematic archaeological survey of the northern grottoes at Mogao grottoes in Dunhuang, unearthing a notable number of cultural relics and fragmentary artefacts. One of the fragments, B 464:141, constitutes the total number of 安藏Anzang’s poetry. In this study, we explore its cultural and religious significance within the broader framework of Old Uyghur Buddhist literature by analysing the linguistic features and literary structure of this translation. Moreover, we incorporate two additional stanzas, potentially translated by Anzang, into the Old Uyghur alliterative rendition of the Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna. To that end, this study is designed to explore a newly identified fragment of Samantabhadra-caryā-praṇidhāna in the Old Uyghur collection of the Liaoning Provincial Museum and fragment B 464:141 from the Dunhuang Academy collection.
