Evaluation of Azerbaijan and Erzurum Funnies Under Superiority Theory
Abstract
In this study it is aimed to find out how the superiority theory from
the theories of laughing has been observed in Azerbaijan and Erzurum
jokes and to identify and analyze Azerbaijan and Erzurum jokes which
are in accordance with the superiority theory. The difference between
laughing, humour, witticism and joke has not been completely
explained. There have been very different comments and definitions on
laughing. Generally it can be said that laughing is a behaviour as a
result of intense positive feelings. For humour it is also said it is
laughing. For humour to exist there needs to be laughing. Therefore
when asked “What is humour?”, many have responded it is laughing.
In the case of jokes it is a important genre resulting from the oral
traditions of societies. Despite its brevity it aims to provide its message
effectively and is a genre with origins from thousands of years. With
the emergence of joke theories one of the most commonly used ones
has been the superiority theory. In this study it is aimed to see/show
how the superiority theory has been used in Azerbaijan and Erzurum
jokes. The jokes with the superiority theory have been studied using
Haluk Harun Duman’s Erzurum Jokes and Famous Humourists,
Mehmet Zeki Kilic and Yasar Atnur’s Erzurum Jokes as well as Ejder
Ol’s Azerbaijan Jokes with Lived Experiences and Concrete Examples.
