The Utilization of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Pediatric Patients with Neurological Disorders
Abstract
Background/Aims: In recent years, interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods has been steadily increasing both worldwide and in our country. To evaluate the prevalence, types, determinants, and perceived effects of CAM use among children with neurological disorders, and to compare findings with current literature.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 753 children aged 0–18 years who presented to a pediatric neurology outpatient clinic between January 2011 and February 2013. Data were collected using a structured face-to-face questionnaire examining sociodemographic characteristics, neurological diagnoses, types and frequency of CAM use, reasons for use, perceived benefits, and adverse effects. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were performed, and a significance level of p<0.05 was accepted.
Results: CAM use was reported in 58% of participants. The most frequently used methods were mind–body practices (55.8%), biologically based therapies (42.3%), and manipulative/body-based methods (19%). Higher paternal education level, multiple neurological diagnoses, and frequent outpatient visits were significantly associated with CAM use (p<0.05). CAM use was most common among children with cerebral palsy (81.3%), learning disabilities (70.8%), and developmental delay (69.2%). Nearly half of the families (47.6%) reported perceived benefit, while adverse effects were reported in 1.8% of users, all of which were mild.
Conclusion: CAM use is highly prevalent among children with neurological disorders and is often employed as a complementary approach alongside conventional medical treatment. Although families frequently perceive benefit, the scientific evidence supporting most CAM modalities remains limited, and certain biologically based treatments may pose drug-interaction risks. Clinicians should routinely inquire about CAM use, guide families with evidence-based information, and consider potential interactions during management. Further controlled studies are needed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CAM methods in pediatric neurology.
