The Anonymity Dilemma in New Media: An Analysis of Instagram Comments

Abstract

The study first examined and discussed the dilemmas arising in the context of the advantages and risks of anonymity. On the other hand, within the scope of the research, 3,016 anonymous user comments posted under the posts shared on the Instagram accounts of Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç, a political figure, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Turkey, a state institution, and Hürriyet Newspaper, a media organization, between December 1-10, 2025, were analyzed using Computer-Assisted Content Analysis. The findings revealed that 38.3% of the comments fell into the Critical Discourse category, 31.1% into the Social/Political Demand category, 19.6% into the Support/Prayer category, 5.8% into the Information Gathering/Sharing category, and 2.9% into the Humor/Irony category. The most striking finding was that the Hate Speech/Slang category remained at a rate of 2.3%. This finding clearly demonstrates that anonymity is not only used to make aggressive statements, as is often attributed to it, but also provides a safe space where criticism and demands can be communicated to rule-makers, showing that anonymity is not one-dimensional and that comments vary depending on the context and medium.
