TRANSITION TOWARD A CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN TURKISH TEXTILE AND CLOTHING COMPANIES- A BRIEF EVALUATION

Abstract

Circular economy has become an important agenda in the textile industry, as in other industries, for some time. Global-scale textile companies have already taken important steps in this area, which is dominated by the European Union, which has implemented a rapid transition plan. However, one of the most important problems is that the concept of a circular economy has not been understood correctly. In this study, based on the report and principles published by Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2017, which is the one of most important guides for the industry in this field, the advantages and disadvantages of the textile industry in Turkey in transition toward a circular economy were briefly evaluated. There are significant shortcomings in digitalization, raw material production (especially new generation fibres), high value added recycled material production, and increasing the utilisation of materials. For companies working for the domestic market using banned/restricted substances is also an important obstacle in this transition. The strong infrastructure, qualified workforce, and recycling capacity of the textile sector stand out as advantages that will facilitate the transition. However, increasing R&D and close cooperation between textile manufacturers, recycling companies and academia will be major driving forces that will speed up the transition considerably

TÜRK TEKSTİL VE HAZIR GİYİM İŞLETMELERİNDE DÖNGÜSEL EKONOMİYE GEÇİŞ-KISA BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Abstract

Döngüsel ekonomi bir süredir, diğer sektörlerde olduğu gibi tekstil sektöründe de önemli bir gündem haline gelmiştir. Özellikle Avrupa Birliği’nin ısrarla takip ettiği ve hızlı bir geçiş planı uyguladığı döngüsel ekonomi konusunda küresel ölçekli tekstil firmaları da önemli adımlar atmaya başlamıştır. Ancak bu konuda en önemli problemlerden biri döngüsel ekonomi kavramının doğru anlaşılamamasıdır. Bu çalışmada, sektörün bu alanda şimdiye kadar en önemli kılavuzu olan ve Ellen Macarthur Foundation tarafından 2017 yılında yayımlanan rapor temel alınarak ve bu raporda yer alan prensipler kullanılarak, Türkiye’de tekstil sektörünün döngüsel ekonomiye geçişte avantaj ve dezavantajları kısaca değerlendirilmiş ve öneriler sunulmuştur. Özellikle dijitalleşme, hammadde üretme (örneğin yeni nesil liflerin üretilmesi), katma değeri yüksek geri dönüştürülmüş ürün üretme ve malzeme kullanım ömrünü uzatma konularında önemli eksiklikler göze çarpmaktadır. İç piyasaya yönelik üretim yapan firmalarda yasaklı/kısıtlı kimyasal kullanımından henüz çıkılmaması da söz konusu geçişte önemli bir engeldir. Tekstil sektörünün güçlü alt yapısı, nitelikli işgücü ve geri kazanım kapasitesi ise geçişi kolaylaştıracak üstünlükler olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Geçişi hızlandıracak temel itici güç ise ar-ge çalışmalarının ve tekstil üreticileri, geri kazanım firmaları ve araştırma kurumları arasındaki iş birliğinin artırılmasıdır.
