The Contribution of Student Organizations within the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of a Public University

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between the objectives of student organizations operating within a public university and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and designed as a case study, with data collected through document analysis. The purpose statements of 225 active student clubs at the university were analyzed to determine the extent to which they aligned with the SDGs, employing a directed content analysis method. The findings revealed that 38% of the student clubs addressed the SDGs either directly or indirectly in their activities. The most frequently represented goals were “Quality Education,” “Good Health and Well-Being,” and “Reduced Inequalities.” In contrast, no student club objectives were found to be related to “No Poverty,” “Zero Hunger,” or “Clean Water and Sanitation.” The results indicate that while student clubs possess an awareness of sustainability, this awareness remains limited in certain areas. In conclusion, although the contributions of university student organizations to the Sustainable Development Goals are positive, it is emphasized that inclusiveness should be enhanced and that their strong potential should be transformed into action through awareness and educational initiatives, particularly in areas such as environment, poverty, and water management.

Sürdürülebilir Kalkınma Amaçları Bağlamında Öğrenci Topluluklarının Katkısı: Bir Devlet Üniversitesi Örneği

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, bir devlet üniversitesi bünyesinde faaliyet gösteren öğrenci topluluklarının amaçlarının Birleşmiş Milletler 2030 Sürdürülebilir Kalkınma Amaçları (SKA) ile ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımıyla yürütülen çalışma, durum çalışması deseninde tasarlanmış olup veriler doküman analizi yöntemiyle toplanmıştır. Üniversitede aktif olarak faaliyet gösteren 225 öğrenci topluluğunun amaç ifadeleri incelenmiş ve bu amaçların SKA’larla ne ölçüde örtüştüğü yönlendirilmiş içerik analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre toplulukların yüzde 38’inin faaliyetlerinde SKA’lara doğrudan veya dolaylı biçimde yer verdiği belirlenmiştir. Topluluk amaçlarında en fazla temsil edilen hedefler “Nitelikli Eğitim”, “Sağlık ve Kaliteli Yaşam” ve “Eşitsizliklerin Azaltılması” olmuştur. Buna karşın “Yoksulluğa Son”, “Açlığa Son” ve “Temiz Su ve Sanitasyon” amaçlarına yönelik herhangi bir topluluk amacına rastlanmamıştır. Bulgular, öğrenci topluluklarının sürdürülebilirlik farkındalığına sahip olduklarını ancak bazı alanlarda bu farkındalığın sınırlı düzeyde kaldığını göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak, üniversite öğrenci topluluklarının sürdürülebilir kalkınma hedeflerine yönelik katkıları olumlu olmakla birlikte, kapsayıcılığın artırılması ve özellikle çevre, yoksulluk ve su yönetimi gibi alanlarda bilgilendirme ve farkındalık çalışmalarıyla mevcut potansiyellerinin eyleme dönüştürülmesinin teşvik edilmesi gerekmektedir.
