Psikolojik Danışman Adaylarının Yaptıkları İlk Psikolojik Danışma Oturumunun Yorumlayıcı Fenomenolojik Analizi

Abstract

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the First Psychological Counseling Sessions of Novice Psychological Counselors

Year 2024, Volume: 10 Issue: 2, 102 - 114, 25.12.2024

Abstract

The first counseling session marks a critical transition for prospective counselors in psychological counseling and guidance undergraduate programs. In the transition from theoretical learning to practical application, it becomes necessary to understand subjective experiences. This study uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to investigate how prospective counselors make sense of their first counseling sessions and their first encounters with clients. The study aims to deeply examine the subjective experiences of psychological counselors in their first psychological counseling sessions and provide various insights into the difficulties they experience and their coping mechanisms. Six fourth-year undergraduate novice psychological counselors from various universities in Turkey participated in the in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was used and data collection was conducted online. Transcripts were analyzed using IPA, and rigor was ensured through iterative steps and member checking. As a result of the analysis, four superordinate themes emerged: emotional reactions and self-perception at first encounter (1), emotional resonance blurs professional boundaries (2), the pressure of being time and record-based (3), tension between theory and practice (4). Ultimately, the study underscores the need for comprehensive training programs that integrate theory with practical skills and emphasize emotional resilience. Supportive supervision practices and educational reforms are necessary to prepare aspiring counselors for the complexities of real-world counseling.
