Museum Stories from European Migration Road

Abstract

The museum, whose new definition was announced by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 2022, brings to the agenda its public, accessible, and inclusive structure; as an institution that promotes diversity and sustainability for society, it is a candidate to shape the future. The definition of museum, in terms of its functions, holds museums responsible for carrying out museology with ethical and professional understandings, considering the participation of the society in the implementation stages. 2023's 18 May International Museum Day theme is "sustainability and well-being". ICOM brings to the agenda the responsibility of museums, which it defines as trustworthy institutions and ties in our shared social fabric, to create a cascading effect to promote positive change and sustainability. In this theme, sustainability focuses on practices, such as being active in environmental action, fighting social isolation, developing inclusive policies and practices, and protecting mental health. With the museum day theme that overlaps with the new museum definition, museums that include inclusivity on their agenda can follow an approach to diversify their social functions to implement sustainability. In this case, it will be seen that they often choose challenging topics to fulfil the condition of creating meaning by using the concepts of identity, race, multiculturalism, inclusion, participation, and diversity to make the visitor experience the museum on a hermeneutic basis. Migration, which has become one of the main problems, is among the issues that are difficult to handle. This study questions the ways of using museum exhibitions and events to negotiate the differences and prejudices in the treatment of the phenomenon of migration, in line with the concepts discussed in the new museum definition, through Austrian examples. The fact that migration is one of the most important phenomena that rapidly shapes cities in demographic, socio-political and cultural contexts requires that samples of the theme of migration in the museums in and around Vorarlberg, Austria, be evaluated within the framework of the new museum definition. In this context, how museums in and around Vorarlberg, Austria, handle this phenomenon, and the studies carried out in museums towards immigrants and refugees, have been examined in detail.

Avrupa Göç Yolunda Müze Hikayeleri

Abstract

Uluslararası Müzeler Konseyi (ICOM) tarafından 2022’de yeni tanımı ilan edilen müze, halka açık, erişilebilir ve kapsayıcı yapısını gündeme getirerek; toplum için çeşitliliği ve sürdürülebilirliği teşvik eden bir kurum olarak geleceğe yön vermeye adaydır. Müze tanımı, işlevleri açısından müzeleri etik ve profesyonel anlayışlarla müzeciliği uygulama aşamalarında toplumun katılımını gözeterek yerine getirmekle sorumlu tutmaktadır. 2023’ün 18 Mayıs Uluslararası Müzeler Günü teması “sürdürülebilirlik ve esenlik”tir. ICOM, güvenilir kurumlar ve ortak sosyal dokumuzdaki bağlar olarak tanımladığı müzelerin, pozitif değişimi teşvik etmek için basamaklı bir etki yaratma sorumluluğunu gündeme taşımakta ve sürdürülebilirliği teşvik etmektedir. Sürdürülebilirlik bu temada çevresel eylemde aktif olmak, sosyal izolasyonla mücadele etmek, kapsayıcı politika ve uygulamalar geliştirmek ve ruh sağlığını korumak gibi pratiklere odaklanmaktadır. Yeni müze tanımıyla örtüşen müzeler günü teması ile, kapsayıcılığı ajandalarına alan müzeler sürdürülebilirliği hayata geçirebilmek amacıyla toplumsal işlevleri de çeşitlendirme yaklaşımı izleyebilirler. Bu durumda kimlik, ırk, çokkültürlülük, kapsayıcılık, katılım ve çeşitlilik kavramlarını kullanarak bir anlam oluşturma koşulunu yerine getirmek ve ziyaretçiye müzeyi bir hermenötik temel olarak deneyimletmek için özellikle zor konuları sıklıkla seçtikleri görülecektir. Temel sorunlardan biri haline gelen göç işlenmesi zor konular arasındadır. Bu çalışma göç olgusunun işlenişinde farklılıkların ve önyargıların müzakeresi için ve müze sergi ve etkinliklerinin kullanım biçimlerini Avusturya örnekleri üzerinden yeni müze tanımında ele alınan kavramlar doğrultusunda sorgulamaktadır. Göçün kentleri demografik, sosyo-politik ve kültürel bağlamda hızla şekillendiren en önemli olgulardan biri olması Avusturya’nın Vorarlberg eyaletindeki ve çevresindeki müzelerin göç temasına ilişkin örneklerin yeni müze tanımı çerçevesinde değerlendirilmesini gerektirmektedir. Bu bağlamda, Avusturya’nın Vorarlberg eyaletindeki ve çevresindeki müzelerin bu olguyu ele alış biçimlerinin yanı sıra müzelerde göçmen ve mültecilere yönelik yapılan çalışmalar ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiştir.
