Determining The Knowledge and Level of Attitudes of The Secondary School Students to Environment and Nature; A Case of Erzurum

Abstract

The most urgent thing to do for protecting nature and environmental problems that also result in
consuming the natural sources very fast is educating and informing people. This kind of informing and education of
people is very important to reach a secure future on condition that it starts at earlier ages. However, in order to gain
the desired success in the education process of younger students, it is also important to impose positive attitudes to
the students in addition to related knowledge. In this study, it is aimed to determine the level of success of students
in converting knowledge of common opinions about environment and nature, learning styles, and behaviors into
attitude. In the study, a survey was applied to 388 students at the 6,7, and 8th grade secondary school students in
the Yakutiye and Palandöken districts of Erzurum. The data gathered from the survey were analyzed by the packet
program SPSS. According to the analysis results, only %19 of students’ positive behavior towards environment and
nature were based on the acquired knowledge. As a result, together with conveying knowledge about environment
to their minds during the school education, activities such as nature camps, recycling, environmental observation,
visits and competitions must be supported as well. Besides, in order to make students gain environmental and
nature awareness, landscaping such as practice gardens, small greenhouses, bird rests, poultry houses, planting in
flower pot should take place at physical places of schools.
