Yield and Quality Performances of Artifcial Pasture Mixtures Under Dryland Conditions

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the suitable pasture mixtures for rangelands which have to
be improved only artifcial ppasture in Tokat Province of Black Sea region located in the transitional climate zone
during the period of 2008-2010. Pure sowings, and binary, ternary and quartet mixtures of alfalfa, sainfoin, great
burnet, crested wheatgrass, smooth brome, orchardgrass and tall fescue were examined in completely randomized
block design with 4 four replicates regarding to yield and quality performance. The highest dry matter yield was
obtained from the mixture of sainfoin + great burnet + orchardgrass (1188.9 kg da
-1). The lowest dry matter yield
(562.1 kg da
-1) was obtained from the pure sowing of orchardgrass. Crude protein yields, ADF ratios, NDF ratios
and IVTDMD ratios ranged between 59.0 kg da
-1 and 187.5 kg da-1, 37.35 % and 44.58 %, 43.49 % and 68.55 %,
54.56 % and 65.95 %, respectively. Irrespective to which mixture, it was determined that the forages of mixtures
had better qualities of ADF, NDF and IVTDMD than pure sowings of grasses. Furthermore, dry matter yields of
ternary and quartet mixtures were higher than those of pure sowings. The results showed that contributions of the
grasses to the yields of the mixtures decreased with time. On the other hand, when the number of species in the
mixture increased, the contributions of the grasses to the yields of mixtures also increased. Thus, more balanced
mixtures were obtained from the mixture with increased number of species. In conclusion, one of (1) ternary
mixtures of crested wheatgrass, smooth brome, orchardgrass and tall fescue with sainfoin +great burnet, or (2)
binary mixture of alfalfa + orchardgrass, and (3) ternary mixture of alfalfa + great burnet + orchardgrass can be
used in establishing artifcial pasture in Tokat province and similar ecological conditions
