Alcohol, Substance and Nicotine Use in Adults having Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Comorbid with Tic Disorder

Abstract

Few studies have investigated the effect of tic disorder (TD) co-occurring with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) on smoking, alcohol use disorders (AUD) and substance use disorders (SUD). We detected lifetime TD, smoking and AUD/SUD in 559 adults with OCD and questioned sociodemographic variables involving adult life including educational achievement, unemployment rate, marital status and suicide attempts (SA). Fifty-four patients (9.66%) had current or past TD. Individuals with and without TD had similar prevalence of AUD/SUD and smoking and similar severity of OCD, anxiety and depressive symptoms. OCD+TD group was characterized by early onset of OCD, male predominance and low percentage of the married. Years of education, unemployment rate and history of SA did not show any difference. TD accompanying OCD in adults has no aggravating impact on the severity of OCD, on predisposition to harmful substances, on educational attainment, unemployment rate, and history of SA whereas marital status is seriously influenced.
