Current tourism approaches after pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered profound disruptions in global tourism, accelerating structural transformations that extend beyond temporary crisis responses. This study aims to examine the emerging approaches and trends shaping post-pandemic tourism and to evaluate their implications for the future development of the tourism sector. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study employs secondary data analysis and thematic content analysis based on academic literature, industry reports, and international tourism statistics. Following a systematic review process, recurring concepts and patterns were identified and classified into six major thematic categories: digitalisation, health and safety protocols, bleisure travel, staycation, proximity tourism, and long-tail tourism. The findings indicate that post-pandemic tourism is characterised by increasing demand for technology-enabled services, enhanced health security, flexible travel arrangements, and more localised and personalised tourism experiences. The study further argues that these trends reflect not only adaptive responses to a global crisis but also deeper behavioural and value-based transformations consistent with the transformative tourism perspective. By providing an integrated thematic framework, the research contributes to a better understanding of the structural evolution of tourism and offers strategic insights for destination managers and policymakers seeking to enhance resilience, sustainability, and long-term competitiveness in the post-pandemic era.
