Narrative Landscape Design for Strengthening Place Identity: A Case Study of Böcüzade Park (Isparta, Türkiye)
Abstract
This study investigates the potential of narrative landscape design to strengthen place identity and spatial experience through the case of Böcüzade Park in Isparta, Türkiye. A qualitative, design-oriented methodology was adopted, consisting of conceptual review, site analysis, and development of a narrative landscape design model. Spatial, historical-cultural, and functional analyses were conducted to identify the physical characteristics, cultural references, collective memory, and identity values of the site. Based on these findings, Isparta’s rose production culture, Seljuk geometric design principles, traditional production practices, and the historical legacy of the Böcüzade family were transformed into spatial design strategies. The proposed model integrates experiential routes, focal points, thresholds, symbolic elements, and sensory landscape components. The study demonstrates that narrative landscape design can contribute to making cultural memory visible, strengthening local identity, enhancing genius loci, and creating meaningful relationships between users and urban public spaces.
