The Mediating Role of Positive Future Expectations in the Relationship Between Human Rights Perception and Well-Being Among University Students

Abstract

Human rights are universal and inalienable rights that belong to all human beings without distinction. The protection of these rights not only ensures legal security for individuals, but also enables them to live dignified, free, and secure lives, thereby promoting their overall psychological and social well-being and laying the foundation for social peace. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between university students' perception of human rights and their psychological well-being, as well as the mediating role of positive future expectations in this relationship. A total of 417 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs participated in the study. Data were collected using the Demographic Information Form, Psychological Well-Being Scale, Human Rights Scale in the Context of Generational Rights, and Positive Future Expectations Scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26 and the Hayes Process Macro add-on. The results showed that as university students' perception of human rights increased, both their psychological well-being and their hope for the future increased. The study also found that as positive future expectations increased, psychological well-being levels increased. Finally, it was found that future expectations played a mediating role in the relationship between human rights perception and psychological well-being. The findings were discussed in light of the literature in the field.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinde İnsan Hakları Algısı ve İyilik Hali Arasındaki İlişkide Olumlu Gelecek Beklentisinin Aracı Rolü

Abstract

İnsan hakları, bireylerin yalnızca insan olmaları nedeniyle sahip oldukları, hiçbir ayrıma dayanmayan, evrensel ve devredilemez haklardır. Bu hakların korunması, bireyin hukuki güvencesini sağlamanın ötesinde, onun onurlu, özgür ve güvenli bir yaşam sürerek bütüncül psikolojik ve sosyal iyilik haline ulaşmasının ve toplumsal barışın temel koşulunu oluşturur. Bu araştırma, üniversite öğrencilerinin insan hakları algısı ile psikolojik iyilik hali arasındaki ilişkiyi ve bu ilişkide olumlu gelecek beklentisinin aracı rolünü incelemek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmaya toplam lisans ve lisans üstü düzeye öğrenim gören toplam 417 öğrenci katılmıştır. Veriler Demografik Bilgi Formu, Psikolojik İyi Oluş Ölçeği, Kuşak Hakları Bağlamında İnsan Hakları Ölçeği ve Olumlu Gelecek Beklentisi Ölçeği aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Toplanan veriler SPSS 26 ve Hayes Process Macro eklentisi ile analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, üniversite öğrencilerinin insan hakları algısı yükseldikçe hem psikolojik iyilik hallerinin hem de gelecekten duydukları umudun arttığını göstermiştir. Araştırmada ayrıca olumlu gelecek beklentisi yükseldikçe psikolojik iyilik hali düzeyinin arttığı bulunmuştur. Son olarak, gelecek beklentisinin, insan hakları algısı ile psikolojik iyilik hali arasındaki ilişkide aracı rolünün olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Bulgular alan yazın ışığında tartışılmıştır.
