A Critique of Translation and Text: Terminological, Anachronistic, and Editorial Flaws in The Turkish Edition of Peter Thonemann’s the Hellenistic Age: A Very Short Introduction

Abstract

This study offers a critical evaluation of Aymesey Albay’s 2025 Turkish translation of Peter Thonemann’s The Hellenistic Age: A Very Short Introduction. Framed within the methodologies of Archaeology and Ancient History, the review addresses significant issues in the translation, including terminological inconsistencies, narrative flaws, instances of anachronistic usage, and shortcomings in citation practices. It also aims to rectify deficiencies related to the text's formal stylistic and orthographic properties. The original work itself is criticized for its narrow focus—primarily on the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE—and its failure to establish contextual continuity due to disjointed chapter headings. This suggests the book has an eclectic structuredriven by the author's specific interests. Consequently, the volume does not fully meet the standard for a “very short introduction,” as it neglects to present the fundamental dynamics of the Hellenistic period comprehensively.

Eine kritische Bewertung von Peter Thonemanns The Hellenistic Age: A Very Short Introduction

Öz

Diese Studie bietet eine kritische Bewertung der türkischen Übersetzung von Peter Thonemanns The Hellenistic Age: A Very Short Introduction, angefertigt von Aymesey Albay im Jahr 2025. Im Rahmen der methodischen Ansätze der Archäologie und Alten Geschichte werden zentrale Probleme der Übersetzung thematisiert, darunter terminologische Inkonsistenzen, narrative Mängel, anachronistische Verwendungsweisen sowie Defizite in der Zitierpraxis. Darüber hinaus zielt die Untersuchung darauf ab, Schwächen in Bezug auf die formalen stilistischen und orthographischen Eigenschaften des Textes zu korrigieren. Auch das Originalwerk selbst wird kritisiert, da es einen engen Schwerpunkt – vornehmlich auf das 3. und 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. – legt und es versäumt, aufgrund fragmentierter Kapitelüberschriften eine kontextuelle Kontinuität herzustellen. Dies legt nahe, dass das Buch eine eklektische Struktur aufweist, die von den spezifischen Interessen des Autors geprägt ist. Infolgedessen erfüllt der Band nicht vollständig den Anspruch einer „Very Short Introduction“, da es ihm nicht gelingt, die grundlegenden Dynamiken der hellenistischen Epoche in umfassender Weise darzustellen.

Bir Çeviri ve Metin Eleştirisi: Peter Thonemann, Helenistik Çağ: Kısa Bir Giriş Eserindeki Terminolojik, Anakronik ve Editoryal Sorunlar

Öz

Bu çalışma, Peter Thonemann’ın The Hellenistic Age: A Very Short Introduction adlı eserinin, 2025’te Aymesey Albay tarafından Koç Üniversitesi Yayınları’ndan çıkan Türkçe çevirisini eleştirel bir yaklaşımla değerlendirmektedir. İncelemede, Arkeoloji ve Eskiçağ Tarihi disiplinlerinin yöntemleri çerçevesinde eserde görülen terminolojik tutarsızlıklar, anlatım sorunları, anakronik kullanım örnekleri ile dipnot ve kaynak gösterimindeki eksiklikler ele alınmış; ayrıca metnin biçimsel yazım özellikleri ve stiline ilişkin aksaklıkların düzeltilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Özgün eser ise büyük ölçüde MÖ 3.–2. yüzyıllara odaklanan dar bir çerçeve sunmakta ve başlıkların kopukluğu nedeniyle bağlamsal süreklilik sağlamamaktadır. Bu durum, metnin yazarın ilgi alanlarına dayalı seçmeci bir yapı gösterdiğini düşündürmektedir. Dahası eser, dönemin temel dinamiklerini bütüncül biçimde sunmadığı için “kısa bir giriş kitabı” niteliğini de tam olarak karşılamamaktadır.
