Freshwater Fauna on the Mosaics of Antiocheia ad Orontem: The Mosaic of Fish, Ducks, and Water Lilies from Daphne, Rasim Adalı Area

Abstract

In the Roman world, where the Mediterranean was conceptualized as Mare Nostrum, the mosaics of Antiocheia ad Orontem (hereafter Antioch) are distinguished by their rich aquatic iconography. This study focuses on the representation of freshwater fauna and flora, particularly fish, ducks, and water lilies, as seen in the mosaic from the Daphne Rasim Adalı area. In water-rich settlements such as Antioch, Daphne, and Seleucia Pieria, mosaics functioned not only as decorative programs but also as indicators of social status, wealth, and cultural identity. Aquatic creatures depicted in these mosaics draw heavily on Classical traditions, in which water is symbolically associated with life, divinity, and mythological narratives. These depictions, which include fish, ducks, and lotus or water-lily motifs, are part of a visual tradition referred to in iconography as "Nilotic imagery". From the Early Roman period onward, such depictions became increasingly widespread, reflecting an enduring visual vocabulary of nature and abundance. In particular, within Christian architectural contexts and elite domestic villas, representations of animals, natural landscapes, and hunting scenes were reinterpreted, acquiring new theological meanings related to purification, resurrection, and divine creation. Similar iconographic traditions can be observed in the mosaics of Antioch and its surrounding region, as well as in comparable assemblages from Zeugma and Haleplibahçe. These parallels indicate a shared regional artistic language in which freshwater environments were idealized and symbolically charged. In Antioch, water-themed mosaics reached their peak in the 2nd–3rd centuries AD, yet the tradition persisted into the Early Byzantine period, integrating Classical heritage and Christian symbolism within a unified visual culture. It is to this later phase that the comparative material belongs: the mosaics of Antioch and their parallels are generally dated to the 5th–6th centuries AD, while the Mosaic of "Fish, Ducks, and Water Lilies" from the Daphne Rasim Adalı area is dated to the last quarter of the 5th century and the 6th century AD.

Abstract

In der römischen Welt, in der das Mittelmeer als Mare Nostrum konzeptualisiert wurde, zeichnen sich die Mosaiken von Antiochia durch ihre reiche, maritim geprägte Ikonographie aus. Diese Studie untersucht insbesondere die Darstellung der Binnengewässerfauna im Kontext von Süßwasserfischen. In wasserreichen Siedlungen wie Antiochia, Daphne und Seleukeia Pieria wurden Mosaiken nicht nur als ästhetische Elemente, sondern auch als Ausdruck von Status und Wohlstand verstanden. Die in den Mosaiken dargestellten Meeres- und Wasserlebewesen sind größtenteils von der klassischen Mythologie inspiriert; das Meer wird als Quelle des Lebens gemeinsam mit Göttern, mythologischen Wesen und realer Fauna dargestellt. Szenen mit Fischen und Fischfang besitzen sowohl dekorative als auch ökonomische Bedeutungen und spiegeln einen wichtigen Bestandteil des römischen Marktsystems wider. Dank der bei der Mosaikproduktion verwendeten Musterbücher konnten Auftraggeber Kompositionen auswählen, die dem architektonischen Programm ihrer Räume entsprachen. Archäometrische Daten zeigen, dass die in den Mosaiken verwendeten Stein- und Glastesserae aus lokalen Quellen stammen, was auf das Vorhandensein hochentwickelter Werkstätten in der Region hinweist. Diese Produktionstradition, die im 2.–3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ihren Höhepunkt erreichte, erhielt in der frühbyzantinischen Zeit neue religiöse Bedeutungen, indem sie die reinigende und göttliche Natur des Wassers sowie die sakrale Symbolik des Fisches hervorhob. Zusammenfassend zeigt die Übereinstimmung von Stil, Ikonographie und Material die Existenz der Mosaikschule von Antiochia–Daphne und unterstreicht die vielschichtige Bedeutung des Wasserthemas in der Mittelmeerwelt.

Antiokheia ad Orontem Mozaiklerindeki Tatlı Su Faunası: Daphne, Rasim Adalı Alanından Balıklar, Ördekler ve Nilüferler Mozaiği

Abstract

Akdeniz’in “Mare Nostrum” olarak kavramsallaştırıldığı Roma dünyasında, Antiokheia mozaikleri deniz temalı zengin ikonografisiyle dikkat çeker. Bu çalışmada, özellikle tatlı su balıkları bağlamında iç su faunasının temsili ele alınmaktadır. Antiokheia, Daphne ve Seleukia Pieria gibi su kaynakları bakımından zengin yerleşimlerde mozaikler, yalnızca estetik bir unsur değil, aynı zamanda statü ve refah göstergesi olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Mozaiklerde yer alan deniz ve su canlıları çoğunlukla Klasik mitolojiden beslenmekte; deniz, yaşamın kaynağı olarak tanrılar, mitolojik yaratıklar ve gerçek fauna ile birlikte betimlenmektedir. Balık ve balıkçılık sahneleri ise hem dekoratif hem de ekonomik anlamlar taşımakta, Roma pazar sisteminin önemli bir parçasını yansıtmaktadır. Mozaik üretiminde kullanılan desen kitapları sayesinde müşteriler, mekânın mimari programına uygun kompozisyonları seçebilmekteydi. Arkeometrik veriler, mozaiklerde kullanılan taş ve cam tesserae’nin yerel kaynaklardan elde edildiğini ve bölgede gelişmiş atölyelerin varlığını ortaya koymaktadır. MS 2.–3. yüzyıllarda zirveye ulaşan bu üretim geleneği, erken Bizans döneminde yeni dini anlamlar kazanarak suyun arındırıcı ve ilahi yönünü, balığın kutsallığı ile vurgulanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, stil, ikonografi ve malzeme uyumu, Antiokheia–Daphne mozaik okulunun varlığını ve Akdeniz dünyasında su temasının çok katmanlı önemini göstermektedir.
