On the Role of Polysemy in Ordinary Language Philosophers' Criticism of Metaphysics

Abstract

Ordinary language philosophers, led by Gilbert Ryle, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and John Langshaw Austin, argue that metaphysical problems are a result of the misunderstanding of natural languages. This study aims to relate ordinary language philosophers’ criticism of metaphysics to polysemy in natural languages. In this study, Platonist and Aristotelian metaphysics will be presented as an answer to Socratic problems. Polysemy in natural languages will be discussed as one of the mainstays of Socratic problems. In polysemy, unlike homonymy, there are relationships between different meanings of a word. To exemplify the philosophical importance of this situation, the relationships between different meanings of the word “good” can be given. Ordinary language philosophers claim that this web of meanings cannot be reduced to simple rules and structures. Instead, the web of meanings is related to forms of life. From the ordinary language philosophy perspective, ignoring the polysemous nature of language is one of the sources of inventing metaphysical systems.

Doğal Dillerdeki Çok Anlamlılık Olgusunun Gündelik Dil Felsefecilerinin Metafizik Eleştirisindeki Rolü Üzerine

Abstract

Gilbert Ryle, Ludwig Wittgenstein ve John Langshaw Austin’in başını çektiği gündelik dil felsefecileri metafiziksel sorunların gündelik dilin yeterince anlaşılmamasının bir sonucu olduğunu iddia etmektedirler. Bu çalışmanın amacı gündelik dil felsefecilerinin metafizik eleştirileri ile doğal dillerdeki çok anlamlılık olgusu arasındaki ilişkiyi göstermektir. Çalışmada Platon ve Aristoteles metafizikleri Sokratik sorunlara verilen bir cevap olarak sunulmaktadır. Doğal dillerdeki çok anlamlılık durumu Sokratik sorunların dayanak noktalarından birisi olarak ele alınmaktadır. Çok anlamlılıkta, eşadlılık durumundan farklı olarak, bir kelimenin birbirlerinden farklı anlamları arasında ilişkiler bulunmaktadır. Bu durumun felsefe açısından önemini örneklendirmek için “iyilik” kelimesinin farklı anlamları arasındaki ilişkiler verilebilir. Gündelik dil felsefecileri bu anlam ağının basit kurallara ve/veya yapılara indirgenemeyeceğini iddia etmektedirler. Buradaki karmaşık anlam ağının arkasında yaşam formlarımızın bulunduğunu ifade etmektedirler. Gündelik dil felsefecilerinin penceresinden bakıldığında, bu durumun yeterince anlaşılmamış olması metafiziğin çıkış nedenlerin birisi olarak görülmektedir.
