On Ecosophy and Its Relation to the Phenomenological Tradition

Abstract

Arne Naess, the founder of the theory and the practice of deep ecology, states that philosophical phenomenology, inspired more or less by the work of Husserl, attempts to give a description of the immediately apprehended, and of the act of self-apprehension itself. He asserts that phenomenological viewpoints are valuable for the development of consciousness of a non-instrumental, non-utilitarian content of the immediate experience of nature. Naess argues that there is no epistemological ego to be thought as a realm of interiority that has to reach out to see and understand the world, or there is no subject that exists separately in the world of “things-in-themselves. The Norwegian philosopher situates his elaboration of the subject in the phenomenological tradition as a being-in-the-world. The subject as a being-in-the-world apprehends both herself and her experience of the world within a rich, relational, vital texture. By focusing on the concrete description of the lived, spontaneous experience, phenomenology makes it possible to lay bare the ontological ground that Naess needs to refer to. For Naess, phenomenology is the method of describing our spontaneous, subjective, and real (and sometimes contradictory at first sight) experiences, and he underlines that these concrete experiences are not merely subjective standpoints. Still, they are constitutive parts of the concrete content of the world. In this article, the main underpinnings of the relationship that the deep ecology movement establishes with the phenomenological method will be considered. We will discuss the claim of revealing the totality of the “lived experience” in all its depth and under all its aspects, and we will reflect on the impact of the phenomenological tradition on Naess’s thought.

Ekosofinin Fenomenolojik Gelenekle İlişkisi Üzerine

Abstract

Derin ekoloji kuramının ve pratiğinin kurucusu olan Norveçli filozof Arne Naess’e göre Husserl düşüncesinde kaynağını bulan felsefi fenomenoloji hem dolaysızca kavranan şeyin hem de kendini-kavrama eyleminin kendisinin betimlenmesiyle ilgilenir ve fenomenolojik bakış açıları doğanın dolaysız deneyiminin araçsal-olmayan, faydacı-olmayan içeriğinin bilincini geliştirmek için değerlidir. Naess, temelde bir içsellik alanı olarak düşünülen bir epistemolojik egonun ya da “kendinde-şey”lerin dünyasından apayrı bir yerde var olan bir öznenin olmadığını söyler. Fenomenolojik gelenek içinde bulduğu biçimde Naess özneyi her daim dünyada, dünya-içinde-olan olarak ele almayı tercih eder. Bu türden bir özne hem kendini hem de kendisi olmayana dair deneyimini zengin bir ilişkisel, yaşamsal doku içinde kavrar. Tam da bu nedenle fenomenoloji, yaşanan deneyimin, spontane deneyimin somut betimlemesine odaklanarak Naess’in asıl aradığı ontolojik temeli ortaya koymayı mümkün kılar. Spontane, öznel ve ilk bakışta çelişkili gibi görünebilecek zengin deneyimlerimizin önemsiz öznel bakış açıları olmaktan fazlası olduğunu, bilakis bu deneyimlerin dünyanın somut mahiyetine katıldığını, onu oluşturduğunu anlatmanın metodu fenomenolojidir Naess için. Bu makalede, derin ekoloji hareketinin fenomenolojik yöntemle kurduğu ilişkinin temel dayanaklarını ele alacağız ve “yaşanmış deneyim”in bütünlüğünü tüm derinliğiyle ve tüm taraflarıyla ortaya koyma iddiası ile deneyim dünyasını maddenin uzamsal niteliklerine indirgemekten ısrarla kaçınan Naess düşüncesinde fenomenolojik geleneğin etkisini tartışmaya açacağız.
