Art and Literature as a Possibility of Philosophy in The Early German Romantics

Abstract

This article deals with the early German Romantic (Frühromantik) philosophy (more specifically, the philosophical views of Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel), whose philosophical depth has long been neglected. The early German Romantic philosophers opposed the philosophical tendencies of their time. They abandoned the idea of 'philosophy as the search for absolute principles'. They found problematic the idea that we can represent the Absolute as it is through philosophical systems or concepts. According to these thinkers, the claim to capture the essence or to represent an object as it is in its entirety is an effort against life itself because it is incompatible with its character of becoming and flowing. In this conception, the absolute cannot be represented, but can only be pointed to. To be able to point to it is to give up representing it as absolute. To this end, Schlegel and Novalis put various artistic and literary strategies into play. By making various literary strategies such as fragment, allegory, irony, metaphorical narrative a part of philosophy, romantic philosophers aim to give their philosophy a literary character. Only when it acquires this character will philosophy be able to show the respect it deserves to the Absolute and get closer to it.

Erken Alman Romantiklerinde Felsefenin Bir İmkânı Olarak Sanat ve Edebiyat

Abstract

Bu makale, uzun bir dönem boyunca felsefî derinliği ihmal edilen erken dönem Alman romantik (Frühromantik) felsefesini (daha spesifik olarak Novalis ve Friedrich Schlegel'in felsefi görüşlerini) ele almaktadır. Erken dönem Alman romantik filozofları, kendi dönemlerinin felsefî eğilimlerine karşı çıkan isimlerdir. Onlar 'mutlak ilkelerin arayışı olarak felsefe' düşüncesini terk etmişlerdir. Onlar Mutlak olanı felsefi sistemler yahut kavramlar aracılığı ile olduğu gibi temsil edebileceğimiz düşüncesini problemli bulurlar. Söz konusu düşünürlere göre özü ele geçirme ya da bir nesneyi olduğu gibi bütünüyle temsil etme iddiası, yaşamın kendisine karşı bir çabadır çünkü bu yaşamın, oluş ve akış karakterine uymaz. Bu kavrayışta mutlak temsil edilemez, ancak ona sadece işaret edilebilir. Ona işaret edebilmek, onu kesin olarak temsil etmekten vazgeçmekle mümkündür. Bu amaçla Schlegel ve Novalis, çeşitli sanatsal ve edebi stratejileri devreye sokarlar. Fragman, alegori, ironi, metaforik anlatım gibi çeşitli edebi stratejileri felsefenin bir parçası kılmak suretiyle romantik filozoflar, felsefelerine edebi bir hüviyet kazandırmayı amaçlarlar. Ancak bu karakteri kazandığında felsefe, Mutlak olana hak ettiği saygıyı gösterebilecek ve ona yakınlaşabilecektir.
