The Combat of Reason and Passion: A Humean Analysis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the combat or conflict thought to exist between reason and passion throughout the history of philosophy from a Humean perspective. In general, it has been argued that reason wins or should win this combat. However, David Hume considers passion as an integral part of human nature and, for this reason, conducts a detailed investigation into its mechanism of functioning. As a result of this inquiry, he famously and intriguingly asserts that reason is the slave of the passions. However, he says that when we correct an erroneous judgment or discover the inadequacy of the means to achieve the end, our passions will also obey to reason. In this study, aim to draw attention to the necessity of considering Hume’s view expressed in the second statement and evaluating both together. Thus, we will argue that there is no actual conflict between reason and passion, as commonly assumed, that their functions are distinct, and that they cannot be positioned in opposition to one another as long as they fulfill their respective functions. Accordingly, we will begin our study with a comprehensive examination of Hume’s views on the passions.

Akıl ve Tutkunun Mücadelesi: Humecu Bir İrdeleme

Abstract

Bu çalışmada amacımız felsefe tarihi boyunca akıl ile tutku arasında var olduğu düşünülen mücadeleyi veya savaşı Humecu bir perspektiften irdelemektir. Genel olarak söz konusu mücadeleyi aklın kazandığı veya kazanması gerektiği savunulmuştur. Oysa David Hume tutkuyu insan doğasının ayrılmaz bir parçası olarak değerlendirir, bu nedenle de onun işleyiş mekanizmasını ayrıntılı bir biçimde soruşturur. Bu sorgulama sonunda da meşhur ve bir o kadar da ilginç ifadesiyle akıl tutkuların kölesisidir der. Ancak o, yanlış bir yargımızı düzelttiğimizde veya amaca ulaşmamızı sağlayacak araçların yetersizliğini keşfettiğimizde tutkumuzun da aklımıza boyun eğeceğini söyler. Çalışmamızda Hume’un ikinci ifadesinde dile getirdiği görüşünü de dikkate almak ve her ikisini birlikte değerlendirmek gerekliğine dikkat çekmeye çalışacağız. Böylelikle akıl ile tutku arasında sanıldığı gibi herhangi bir mücadele olmadığını, her birinin işlevinin farklı olduğunu ve kendi işlevlerini yerine getirdikleri sürece birbirlerine karşıt olarak konumlandırılmalarının mümkün olmadığını ileri süreceğiz. Bu doğrultuda çalışmamıza, Hume’un tutkular hakkındaki görüşlerinin ayrıntılı soruşturmasını yapmakla başlayacağız.
