Did Logical Empiricism Kill Kuhn?

Abstract

After his monumental work, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, was published in 1962, Thomas Kuhn dealt with problems quite a long time such as rationality of scientific theories, theory choice and incommensurability on the axis of reconfiguration of the notion of paradigm. However, beginning from 80s, his on-going analysis aforementioned matters took its last shape with a new orientation including a linguistic turn. As a result of this renewal process, a controversial discussion aroused within the literature of philosophy of science which reaches to top at the 90s whether Kuhn is a genuine alternative to logical empiricism or not. In this study, we offer an assessment via temporarily suspending both Kuhn’s own so-called shift and related debates for a better understanding of his contributions to the philosophy of science by asking whether Kuhn had completed his essential project at the Revolutions or not.

Mantıkçı Empirizm Kuhn’u Bitirdi Mi?

Abstract

Âbidevî Bilimsel Devrimlerin Yapısı adlı kitabının 1962’de yayımlanmasından sonra, Thomas Kuhn, uzunca bir süre, paradigma mefhumunun yeniden işlenmesi ekseninde, bilimsel teorilerin rasyonel yapısı, teori seçimi ve bağdaştırılamazlık gibi problemlerle ilgilenmiştir. Ancak, 80’lerden başlayarak, Kuhn’un mezkûr meselelere dâir sürmekte olan analizleri, dilsel bir dönüşüm içeren yeni bir yönelimle birlikte gerçekleşmiştir. Bu yenilenme sürecinin bir sonucu olarak, bilim felsefesi literatüründe 90’larda doruk noktasına ulaşan, Kuhn’un mantıkçı empirizm için hakîki bir alternatif olup olmadığına yönelik ihtilaflı bir tartışma doğmuştur. Bu çalışmada, hem Kuhn’un sözümona dönüşümünü hem de ilgili tartışmaları askıya alma minvalinde, onun bilim felsefesine olan katkısını daha iyi anlayabilmek için, Devrimler’deki aslî projesini tamamlayıp tamamlamadığı sorusunu yükselterek bir değerlendirme sunuyoruz.
