Sınıf Öğretmeni Adaylarının Geçmiş Yaşantılarının Matematik Dersine Yönelik İnançlarına Olan Etkisinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu nitel çalışma ile sınıf öğretmeni adaylarının geçmiş yaşantılarının matematik dersine yönelik inançlarına olan etkisi araştırılmıştır. Bu amaç kapsamında bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören 73 sınıf öğretmeni adayının geçmiş yaşantılarına yönelik anıları anlatı yoluyla incelenmiştir. Çalışmaya katılan sınıf öğretmeni adayları deneyimledikleri etkili öğretim uygulamalarını, öğretmenlerle olan etkin iletişimlerini ve öğretmenlerin beklentilerine uygun ders anlatmalarını yaşadıkları olumlu deneyimler olarak sıralarken, fiziksel şiddeti, psikolojik baskıyı, öğretmenler ile eğitsel beklentilerin uyuşmamasını, iletişim sorunlarını ve dersin sadece başarılı öğrencilerle işlenmesini olumsuz deneyimler olarak tanımlamaktadırlar. Sınıf öğretmeni adaylarının yaşamış olduğu olumlu deneyimler matematik dersine yönelik kaygılarının azalmasına, ilgilerinin artmasına ve olumlu tutum geliştirmelerine yardımcı olurken, deneyimlenen olumsuz yaşantılar ise matematik dersine yönelik kaygı ve önyargının artmasına ve matematik dersine yönelik korku oluşmasına neden olmuştur. Ayrıca, geçmiş olumlu deneyimler neşe, gurur, hırs, memnuniyet, heyecan, sempati, heves, minnet duyguların hissedilmesine neden olurken, olumsuz yaşantılar korku, kaygı, endişe, öfke, umutsuzluk, hayal kırıklığı, bıkkınlık, hüsran gibi duyguları ortaya çıkarmıştır. Sınıf, ilköğretim matematik ve matematik öğretmenlerine ve öğretmen adaylarına yönelik sınıf yönetimi, iletişim ve çocuk psikolojisi temelli hizmet öncesi ve hizmet içi eğitim fırsatlarının sunulması, matematik dersine yönelik kaygının azaltılmasında ve öğrencilerin matematik derslerinde daha olumlu deneyimler yaşanmasında etkili olacaktır.

The Effect of Pre-service elementary school teachers’ Past Experiences on Their Beliefs About Mathematics

Abstract

With this qualitative study, the effect of pre-service elementary school teachers’ past experiences on their beliefs about mathematics lesson was investigated. Within the scope of this purpose, the memories of 73 pre-service elementary school teachers studying at a state university were analyzed through narrative inquiry. While the pre-service elementary teachers who participated in the study listed the effective teaching practices, efficient student-teachers communication and reaching a consensus between students’ and teachers’ expectations on teaching as positive experiences, they defined physical violence, psychological pressure, mismatch of educational expectations, communication problems and favoritism as negative experiences. The positive experiences of the pre-service elementary school teachers helped to decrease their anxiety, increase their interest, and prompt positive attitude about mathematics lessons, while the negative experiences resulted with increase in anxiety and bias and triggered fear towards the mathematics lessons. In addition, past positive experiences ignited feelings of joy, pride, ambition, satisfaction, excitement, sympathy, enthusiasm, gratitude; although, negative experiences instigated emotions such as fear, anxiety, worry, anger, hopelessness, disappointment, boredom, and frustration. Providing opportunities to elementary, middle, high school and pre-service teachers participate into pre-service and in-service training courses on classroom management, communication and child psychology could be an effective way in reducing anxiety about mathematics lessons and providing students with more positive experiences in mathematics lessons.
