The Effect of Comprehension Skills on Students' Reading Performance: Evaluation of Good and Poor Readers

Abstract

This research aims to examine the variables that affect the reading comprehension performance of second-grade students who have poor and good reading comprehension skills. In the research, studies were conducted with 165 students from various socio-economic levels who continue to the second-grade in the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year in Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş. The data collection tools of the study consist of four texts, two of which are informative and two of which are narrative. These Data collection tools were applied to students individually in a classroom setting with appropriate pre-arranged conditions. Before starting to work with the students, they were informed about the work to be done, and then they started to work as soon as they felt ready in line with the information given. The data of the study were analyzed with the SPSS statistical program using the correlation coefficient and the Mann-Whitney U test. When the findings of the study were examined, it was seen that there were significant differences in the analysis error percentages, listening comprehension skills, decoding time averages, and text reading fluency of the second-year students with good and poor reading skills.
