Morphological Characteristics, Number, Frequency and Difficulty Levels of Words in Turkish Textbooks

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the vocabulary in 4th grade Turkish textbooks prepared by different publishing houses in terms of morphological features, frequencies and number of syllables. In the study where the descriptive scanning model was used, a total of three textbooks, one book each belonging to private publishing houses Koza and Özgün Publishing houses and one book belonging to the Ministry of National Education Publishing House, were examined. Three books constitute the data source of the study. Before the examination, it was determined that the book belonging to MEB Publishing house had 9836 words, the book belonging to Özgün Publishing house had 8990 words, and the book belonging to Koza Publishing house had 11.474 words. After the morphological examination of the words in the books, it was determined that the number of words decreased to 4801, 4647 and 5542, respectively. It was determined that the common and most frequently used words in the three books were “bir, ve, da, metin, bu, Aktivite, olmak, kelime, yazma, anlam, çok”. In addition, after determining the morphological features of the words in the books and taking their frequencies, the syllable numbers of the words were determined; syllable counts of words: 2 syllables, 3 syllables, 4 syllables, 5 syllables, 1 syllable, 6 syllables, 7 syllables and 8 syllables. Based on the findings, it can be said that the textbooks of the three publishing houses were prepared without observing a common word frequency list; the words in the books were morphologically complex and varied; words with at least 1 and at most 8 syllables were included; thus, there were very few words (6, 7 and 8 syllables) that reduced readability. The findings were accessed by two researchers; as a result of the researchers' examinations, agreement was determined as 96%; it was determined that the study was reliable.
