A Comparative Study on Teaching Self-Efficacy and Attitudes Toward the Teaching Profession of Faculty of Education and Pedagogical Training Students

Abstract

This study aims to assess and compare the perceptions of self-efficacy and attitudes toward the teaching profession among students enrolled in a pedagogical training programme and senior students in a faculty of education, and to determine the potential relationship between these two variables. The research is a correlational study using a survey design. The sampling consists of faculty of education students and students in a teacher training programme at a state university in Türkiye. The relationships between the students’ attitudes toward the teaching profession and their perceptions of self-efficacy were examined using correlation analysis. Analyses were also conducted with respect to the variables of department and gender. An evaluation of the overall findings of the study revealed that participants’ levels of self-efficacy in teaching were somewhat high among faculty of education students and high among students in the teacher training programme, and that both groups had somewhat high average attitude scores. The scores of students in the teacher training programme were found to be significantly higher than those of faculty of education students for both variables. Furthermore, it was determined that self-efficacy and attitude scores did not differ according to gender or department. Finally, a moderate, positive correlation was found between the two variables. Based on these findings, it can be asserted that students enrolled in the teacher training programme have higher attitudes toward the teaching profession and higher perceptions of self-efficacy compared to students in the faculty of education. Taking into account the findings, measures should be taken to increase the self-efficacy perceptions of faculty of education students, particularly in field-specific courses, and prospective teachers should be inspired regarding the importance and contributions of teaching profession.

Eğitim Fakültesi ve Pedagojik Formasyon Öğrencilerinin Öğretmenlik Mesleğine Yönelik Öz Yeterlikleri ve Tutumlarının Karşılaştırılması

Abstract

Bu çalışma, pedagojik formasyon programına kayıtlı öğrenciler ile eğitim fakültesi son sınıf öğrencilerinin öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik öz yeterlik algılarını ve tutumlarını değerlendirmeyi ve karşılaştırmayı ve bu iki değişken arasındaki potansiyel ilişkiyi belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma, tarama modeline dayalı ilişkisel bir araştırmadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Türkiye’de bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören eğitim fakültesi öğrencileri ile pedagojik formasyon programındaki öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilerin öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumları ile öz yeterlik algıları arasındaki ilişkiler korelasyon analizi kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Ayrıca bölüm ve cinsiyet değişkenleri açısından da analizler yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın genel bulguları değerlendirildiğinde, katılımcıların öğretmeye ilişkin öz yeterlik düzeylerinin eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinde kısmen yüksek, pedagojik formasyon eğitimi öğrencilerinde ise yüksek olduğu ve tutum puanları açısından her iki grubun da kısmen yüksek ortalamalara sahip olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Pedagojik formasyon öğrencilerinin puanları her iki değişkende de eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinden anlamlı düzeyde yüksek bulunmuştur. Ayrıca, öz yeterlik ve tutum puanlarının cinsiyet ve bölüm değişkenine göre farklılık göstermediği; iki değişken arasında orta düzeyde pozitif bir ilişki bulunduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu bulgulara göre, pedagojik formasyon programına devam eden öğrencilerin, öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumları ve öz yeterlik algıları eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerine kıyasla daha yüksektir. Bulgulardan hareketle, eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinin, özellikle de alan eğitimi derslerinde, öz yeterlik algılarının artırılmasına ilişkin önlemlerin alınması ve öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik mesleğinin önemi ve katkıları konusunda bilgilendirilmesi önerilmektedir.
