Analysis of Elt Students’ Perceptions as to Mobile Phones through Metaphors

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the perceptions of the 3rd and 4th grade Samsun 19 May
University ELT department students’ toward mobile phone via metaphor analysis. Qualitative research
technique and phenomenological design were used and 123 students took part in this study. These students
were asked to complete the sentence “Mobile phone is like a (n) … because …” and this sentence was used
in the analysis of the data. According to the data taken by content analysis technique, the participants
mentioned 69 metaphors and based on their common properties, 6 conceptual categories were identified.
As a result of this study, it has been elucidated that students have quite positive ideas about mobile phone.
However, it is also identified that students have some negative concepts such as a dangerous concept and
addiction.

İngilizce Öğretmenliği Bölümü Öğrencilerinin Cep Telefonu İle İlgili Algılarının Metaforlar Aracılığıyla Analizi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı Samsun 19 Mayıs Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Anabilim Dalında okumakta
olan 3. ve 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin cep telefonu ile ilgili algılarının metafor analizi ile araştırılmasıdır. Nitel
araştırma yöntemi ve olgu bilim deseni çalışmanın esasını teşkil etmektedir. Çalışmada 123 öğrenci yer
almıştır. Öğrencilerden, ‘Cep telefonu ……. gibidir çünkü ………….’ cümlesini tamamlamaları istenmiştir.
İçerik analizi ile elde edilen veriler sonucunda 69 metafor ve bu metaforların ortak özelliklerine göre
gruplandırılması sonucu 6 kategori ortaya çıkmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda öğrencilerin genelde cep
telefonu hakkında olumlu görüşleri ve yaklaşımları olduğu görülmüştür. Bunun yanısıra, bazı öğrenciler
cep telefonunu tehlikeli bir unsur ve bağımlılığın kaynağı olarak belirtmişlerdir.
