Abstract

This research aimed to analyse behavioral, social and emotional characteristics of typically developing siblings of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and the relation between these characterictics, autism severity and maternal depression. It is designed as correlational and casual comparative research and participants are divided into two groups as research group and comparision group. Research group included 90 siblings of children with ASD, between the ages of 6-16, along with mother of each child. Comparision group is comprised of 90 typically developing siblings of typically developing children at same age interval as well as their mothers. Mothers are used as informants. The data were collected from mothers by using stardardized measurement tools and statistical analysis was conducted. Results indicated that siblings of children with ASD have more difficulty in behavioral, social and emotional areas and show more internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems than comparision group. Results revealed positive relation between autism severity and internalizing, externalizing behavior problems, total problem of siblings. Statistically significant relationship between autism severity and maternal depression level is not revealed but maternal depression is a powerfull predictor of all characterictics of siblings. Results from this study provide strong evidence about developmental risk and for the need of support for siblings as well as mothers. There is a need for systematic support and adaptation programs including all family members.

Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu Olan Çocukların Tipik Gelişen Kardeşlerinin Davranışsal, Sosyal Ve Duygusal Özellikleri
